Mechanos 07-10-2003, 09:46 PM That's how big I'm :D right now!! I've never heard anything so beautiful in all my life. If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm talking about hearing my 345 purr like a kitten. The EFI is working perfectly so far. Super smooth!!! Even though it still has the chip for a stock Chevy 350 in the computer it ran better most carbed engines I've heard. Now I can start logging some data and dial in the calibration to suit the IH mill even better. Damn I'm STOKED!!!!!!!!!!

Gen. Nonsense 07-10-2003, 10:01 PM Right Awn! It is always cool to here about folks gettin their junk runnin'. I should be ready to start mine in about 2 weeks. Ive just got to run fuel lines, hoses, plug in the wiring, and fill with fluids.
and hope it runs!
SSGTWC 07-11-2003, 05:52 AM Outfawkinstanding TORC! I was the same way when I started the 392 up after the swap.
Bones 07-11-2003, 06:16 AM SWEET! I bet you were a happy camper last night! I couldn't get off the couch to watch/listen/help. Gald it's running. Now it's the details to start marking off the list....fun fun
MochaMike 07-11-2003, 08:50 AM Congrats!
ihbeast 07-11-2003, 09:22 AM Damn that sounds sweeeeet!! Congrats!

Cool. Wan't that long ago that I rebuilt mine, and I remember how nervous I was the first time I turned it over!! Sure was a great feeling to hear it run.
ChiScouter 07-11-2003, 10:29 AM Good for you:beer:
tsm1mt 07-11-2003, 11:26 AM Woo-hoo, TORC!
And no loose rod bolts this time? :D
Mine sputtered to life last night, too - but just for a second.
The cut-in-half-and-spliced-back exhaust leaked, and it was 1:30am.. so I killed it.
Comedy of errors getting there though..
I had the starter "S" wire hooked to the "I" terminal.. fixed that.. then didn't get juice to the F*rd solenoid.. tracked down the appropriate wire.. got that.. then couldn't get it to run. Had spark, but it was spitting out the carb and exhaust..
"I KNOW I didn't put the disty in 180 off..."
Sure enough... *sigh*
I swear I put #8 at TDC before I dropped the heads on, then made two full revolutions while priming, bringing it back to TDC.. but no matter, it fired.
Now to get the cam break-in done, wire the thermoswitch for the Taurus fan, actually *mount* the new gauges (vs sitting on the dash).. hood, and all that other crap.

did you static time it? thats usily a fail safe method of knowing your timing (and firering order) is corect before start up

Yeah, I did.
I put #8 at TDC when I dropped the heads on.
When priming, I made TWO full revolutions of the crank, which I thought would put #8 back at TDC again.
Then I static timed it and dropped the disty.
And I was 180 off.
Chief yelling alot 07-11-2003, 02:03 PM hmmm I kinda do it difrent
I bring it up on the compresion stroke ither by looking at what the valves are doing or have a budy crank the engine with my fingure on No8 plug hole. When I have it on the compresion stroke I aline up the timing marks usily 1 or 2 BTDC then I drop in the dizzy wire it up. On No8 plug wire I pop in a spark plug and ground it. Then I turn the ingnition on and rotate the dizy slighly back ond forth till I see a spark at the plug. Then I keep rotating it in samller incroment till I stop turning it back and forth. Wher I do stop is when it sparks. Install the the spark plug and wire and fire it up and your usily a few degres out on timing. Last time I did it I had the timing bang on.

What I ended up doing was pulling #8 and putting my thumb over the spark plug hole, then jumpered the Ford solenoid (conveniently located RIGHT THERE) until I felt/heard the WHUFF then eyeballed the balancer and used a wrench to get it to "0".. then re-dropped the disty so when it was in the rotor pointed to #8.
I wasn't looking to "time it" yet.. though the light was hooked up ready to go. :D Just make it run first..
I put #8 at TDC with the balancer at 0 when I dropped the heads, mostly so I wouldn't have to pull the plug and crank it (which I ended up doing anyhow).
I made 2 revolutions thinking that would put me back to where I started, while making sure both rocker shafts were getting oil.
In any case.. I have fire. :D
Mechanos 07-11-2003, 02:16 PM I just put #8 on the compression stroke, lined up the oil pump shaft so the dist. will be oriented the way I want it, stab the dist. and line up the rotor with #8 terminal. It fired right up. After breaking in the camshaft, I shut it off, disconnected the bypass wire to the dist. and loosened the hold down clamp a little. When we started it back up and hit it with the timing light, it was about 0.5* BTDC so we backed it back down to 0 and shut off the engine and clamped it down. Cleared the fault code from the ECM, reconnected the bypass and fired it back up. Now I have to hunt down and find an air cleaner that will fit this thing and fit under the hood. Without any BL, room is at a premium.
Chief yelling alot 07-11-2003, 02:17 PM uhhhh I seee

You must have oooopsed and either initially had the engine at TDC on the exhaust stroke or turned 3 revolutions instead of 2. Oh well, bottom line is it's running now. Bet you can't wait to get home and break that camshaft in.

Must have. Dunno how, but you're right - bottom line is, I can honestly tell Michelle "All I need to do is just turn the key this time.. I swear!"
I've pledged to have the motor running every night this week.. ;)
Anxious to get the cam break-in overwith, change the oil, and get the hydraulic clutch goin' so I can get some miles on it.
While my friend Blair had no qualms hooking his 60-mile 460 up to a gooseneck with a taglong behind it (21,000lbs) and heading for Moab... I'd feel better with some "nice" break-in miles before we head to Rendezvous. :D
I've had enough adventures for a while, and the "Tom Mandera Perseverence in face of Adversity" award needs to go to SOMEONE ELSE.

Mechanos 07-13-2003, 11:08 PM still has the doors off, windsheild frame is off, hood is off, grill is off and top is off. I have all those pieces, they just haven't found there way on it yet. Did some more tinkering on it Friday night, hooked up the PS hoses, filled the reservoir and bled the system (also managed to puke PS fluid all over the garage floor in the process  ) Saturday afternoon, I fabbed up some mounts and got the drivers seat installed ('85 RX-7 buckets). I had to stop after that to get ready to go to a club meeting. Didn't do anything to it today.... I went to the JY this morning and spent the afternoon painting my buddy's 'yoter.
Two Dogs F..king 07-15-2003, 12:29 AM A picture is worth a thousand words :D
Mr. Bastard 07-20-2003, 07:56 AM Oh you fawker.... you cut out the end  ...somethin about those fawkers on the IH board are givin me shit... :flipoff2:
