I'm lookin to buy one for a DD now.

How is the gas milege in them?

Also later down the road i'll start wheeling it lightly. Would it be a dumb idea to do a SAS (with a yota axle) just to run 33x10.5's for now or keep the IFS (both will be regeared and one will be locked atleast)?

Our 94 4runner (3.0 and auto) gets 16-18 highway and 15~ city. Nothin to brag about but it's a real nice rig for her needs.

I wouldn't SAS it for what are are talking about. Bigger tires, sure. Also a 4 cyl/5 speed will be cheaper to run dual cases, etc.

I think I can handle that gas mileage. I would just buy a car but 1. I can't stand sitting that low to the ground having to climb out. 2. Don't wanna be stuck at home if it snows and the other rig is down.
3. I need the interior room for crap and also might need the 4wd to get to places for kayakin, mtn biking or campin.

SAS probably wouldn't be the best Idea unless I planned on 35's atleast. Guess I'll stick with the nice ride (totally forgot how that is in the XJ).

Thanks for the info.

I average 20 MPG with a 22RE and 5 spd in my '95 4Runner.

They make a really sweet DD. The IFS and rear coils/5-link handle rough dirt roads really well :D

with 33's and extra weight, expect a 3.0 V6 to get you maybe around 15 consistently.

When my 3rd Gen truck was stock with 31's I was getting 18 - 22 mpg with the 3.0 V6.

A guy in our club is running 33's (BFG's) with just a 1" BL on his 3rd Gen Reg Cab. Easy to install and not have to mess with IFS lift bracketry, perfect for a DD. Toss in a rear locker while you regear and it will get you most places you want to go. Later on if you want to make it a trail rig then do the SAS.

2nd gen runners arent bad...wish I could keep mine and build it, but I have 2 other rigs... check out the sig :D Mileage depends on the driver really. I have gotten everywhere from 10-20 around town. Just depends on how im driving.

I was thinking about somethign right along those lines and be done till/if i ever do a SAS.

Parents shot down the idea of a 4runner (even if I leave it stock). They want something with a warranty, that gets good gas mileage and something I can't wheel. Looks like I have to look at 2wd pickups or cars

Depending on how much you want to spend.. you could look at like a 95' Subaru Impreza.. I love those cars. 2Door model is awesome.. GL on the car hunt.
