Has anyone tried one of the new Edelbrock Thunder AVS carbs? I just put a 350 in my 82 CJ-5 and I am not pleased with my Holley 670 Truck Avenger. I have had the holley off my jeep 3 times now and still can't get it to run just right. If anyone wants a new 670 give me a call.

What problems are you having with it? It took a little tweaking but mine runs great on my AMC360. If you're dead set on getting rid of it, I'd take it off your hands since I need one for my CJ.

As far as the Edelbrock, The only things I read about it's "off road" capability are spring loaded needle and seats. And Edelbrocks really need something more than that to do well off road.

Why not go with a Quadrajet? They're good off road and you can find SBC manifolds for them all over the place.

I was having problems with it being rich at idle and also with it idleing to high with the choke on (2000 rpm) and it had a slight stumble at low rpm's. I bought the hayes holley manual and adjusted until I gave up with mediocore results. I put on a 750 racing holley today and I loved the idle and the response was great but I couldn't go offroad with it. It would flood at just a slight angle. I like it not even havin a choke and manual secondaries.I was playing around so I bolted on a BG 2 barrel that is about an 800 and it also ran good but it doesent have any vacume ports and I want to get the truck avenger running right so I'm going to get some lower jets tomorrow 68 is stock in both the front and rear, I'm going to try 66 and 64's. I also may need a smaller power valve but I'll wait until later for that. I'm going to disable the choke and get a manual conversion for it. If you have any thoughts on what I need to do my engine specs are 350,280/480 comp. cam, weiand intake(0 to 6000 rpm) and 9:6 to 1 compression.

Rich idle is all about the idle mixture. Try cranking each side down a 1/4 turn at a time until you're not running rich. Make sure that your idle speed (screw on the throttle arm) isn't turned up too high. You want the valves to close all the way so the idle circut works properly.

The fast idle speed is easily adjustable. Turn the engine off, hold the throttle at WOT and you should be able to see the fast idle screw behind the choke. Back it out a little, start it up and try it again.

A bigger squirter and maybe a step up in the accelerator pump cam should take care of your off idle stumble.

Other things to check:

1. Float level. Make sure it's correct. It can dramatically affect performance if it's too high or low.

2. Ignition. Make sure all cylinders are firing properly and that your timing is set correctly.

3. Fuel flow. Make sure your pump is supplying enough flow and pressure.

Thanks for the reply I guess I just got mad and I need to adjust and play with it and get it right.

Well I tried every thing in the book to get mine to run properly and to no avail. Ive changed cams, squirters etc etc. for about two weeks. Since I had got this truck after sitting ten years I was about to chalk it up to just no HP. Well me and the old man swapped on an 8 year old edelbrock off my mothers street rod and holy shit I couldnt believe the freekin difference. Truck runs like a bat out of hell now. So my holley is going back and a new edelbrock thunder offroad is on its way. I have a .28 and .31 spare squirter if you need them no charge.

Jason

PS: A very long search on the web turned up the same thing on alot of avengers ranging from street to truck.

IF YOU USE AN EDELBROCK PULL THE TOP OFF. YOU WILL SEE A PASSAGE BETWEEN THE FUEL BOWLS. I PUT A BLOCK OF RUBBER IN THERE TO STOP THE FUEL FROM RUNNING FROM ONE BOWL TO THE OTHER FLOODING IT ON SIDE HILLS. THIS WAS A DEFINITE IMPROVEMENT. THERES STILL NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A QUADRAJET. GOOD LUCK

Fuel injection. :flipoff2:

But with my Truck Avenger I can follow the Quadrajet equipped chebbys in my club through any off camber or steep hill.

forget the carbs

at the end they are much more expensive than efi kits
