: Need to find an electronic speedometer sending unit

I installed a 2002 obdII tj 4.0L engine and trans in my 1988 yj. Now Im trying to get it smogged (California) and have to go to a state referee-because I went from a carb. to fuel injection.

The electronic speedo. sending unit also tells the PCM when to change air-fuel mixtures (its a must along with a CHECK ENGINE light).

My problem is this; I am also running all the old guages-encluding the mechanical speedometer and I still have the 2002 electronic sending unit that I can swap in for the test.

Does anyone make an electronic sender with the gear shaft running all the way through and capable of screwing the mechanical cable on it? Someone has had to come up with this.
Please let me know-thanks...Terry

I have seen discussion of this in the dodge forum and in this forum before. Make sure you do a search.
I got an adapter with the MOPAR mpi kit, but not sure if it works with the newer OBDII. Who knows:
5/8"x7/8" speedo apapter #9400012
vehicle speed sensor #56027015

Hey,
I apoligise for not getting back to you. We were on vacation at Lake Tahoe on the first week, when I got your reply, but my daughter spilled soda on the key board of the lap top I was using with a week to go, with no more communication.
The unit wasn't what I envisioned, but it might work. Are you using it and if not, is it for sale. The one I need should be 8 pulses per rev. Sorry for the wait, Terry

You might try Painless Wireing. I used them when I did my TBI 350 swap.

I've tried Painless and others with no luck, the only real come back was maybe Gripguru's, less I'll make one, Terry

The VSS pictured is the same one I used on my swap. A 1997 TJ 4.0 into a 1984 CJ-7. You'll need the adaptor (also shown on that pic) to hook it up to your transfer case. Hesco does sell them. Also JSA in El Cajon Calif if your down this way.

go down to your autoparts store and get one from a 1991 jeep yj with the 4.0 there the first with the 4.0 but still have a cable going to the speedo you will have to get a cable from the same 91 the sensor cost me about $65 this is how i did it when i swapped the 4.0 into my 90 yj!!!forgot one thing your plug will have three wires on it you only need two of them one of the wires is a power wire and the sensor makes its own power i was able to use one of the plugs off the air breather it wont clip onto it but it wont fall out eather!!!

The check engine light is going to be the problem. The JTEC (Jeep Truck Engine Controller) controller talks to the MIC (Mechanical Instrument Cluster) via the CCD (Chrysler Collision Detection) buss. The MIC is a computer with built in drivers for the check engine lamp. You are either going to have get an old instrument cluster, hook it up to the buss, and re-wire the check engine light to the dash, or just replace your dash with a newer style MIC. It isn't driven with a single grounding wire line the earlier pre '96 SBEC controllers.

I know it's been a while but do you remember which side was ground and which was to the PCM?

If your looking at it with the connector on top and the mech speedo gear on the bottom, which is which?

I have mine wired up but it's still almost dying when I hit the brakes so I'm assuming it's not wired properly.

It also won't idle down below 1K rpms which I'm assuming is because I wired in the A/C wire and haven't put a relay in it yet.

If anyone has any other ideas as to why it won't idle down let me know. Thanks -James
