I have done a v-8 swap in my 90 YJ I get very bad mileage about 12 . I hate having to fill up all the time. I would like to be able to have more gas. I have noticed that CJ 5s come with a tank under the front seat .
Will this tank fit under a YJ wit minimal modification?
What problems will I face?
Anyone done this and have pics and info?
Let me know
Thanks ahead of time.
you would have to get rid of the current seat mounting bracket and replace it with something that would straddle the cj tank. it is possible but may be easier to just upgrade the rear to a 20 gallon unit if you can afford the loss of ground clearence

if you dont carry passengers in the back, you can mount one tank
in th back, and remove the lower one. in the back you can get up to 50 gallons.

I have the 20 gal. tank in my CJ and 2 five gallon gerry cans
on the back.:smokin: :nuke: :nuke:

It would be easier to upgrade to the 20 gallon. If you have a body lift you could also lift the tank to keep it out of the way for clearance.

what size is your tank now? to swith a 15 gallon tank to 20 gallon in a yj just involes cutting the vent tub on the tank you have. the tanks are the same size.:)

I cant imagine why you would really need much more than a 20 gallon tank and maybe a 5 gallon jug.... Maybe im just used to the 6cyl. Just get one of those big ass fuel cells that are like 32 gallons or something :D

Sure no problem, after I did this mod, which took all of 10 minutes because I had a 3" body lift at the time:eek: I literally sputtered into the gas station and put 20.5 gallons in :D

Mine is real easy to access it is 8 inches higher than stock You cannot see it from the rear and I built a Box so that i can service the tank from Top so tommorow i will do the mod tomorrow.

The original post mentioned that he had a 90 YJ. He would have to swap out to a 91 or later gas tank to accomplish the 20 gallon conversion. I speak from experience here. Prior to 91, they actually had two tanks. The 15 gallon was a metal tank which is significantly narrower than the 20 gallon poly tank. The larger tank also affects the space between the tank and frame rail, so if you want to run dual exhausts, you will have to go outside the frame rail at the very back. The pipe fits between the tank and frame on the passenger side, but the driver's side is too tight.
I get roughly 15 mpg with my TPI v8 with no overdrive, but I do run 3.07 gears. On a tank, I can get about 300 miles. My speedo is off by 150%, so I know I have to fill the tank up when the trip odometer hits 190.

The site states the modification will work on XJ's of the same yrs. Does anyone know if it would work on an '86 XJ or if there are any mods that will. JC Whitney has a 30 gallon tank but I don't have the $400 required for that and if I did would buy a lift b4 a bigger fuel tank.

yea :( my tank is the 15 gallon type. I guess a 20 gallon would be nice but a 30 plus gallon would be better. I dont like having to fill up every day. I work a long way from where I live .

Anyone put a fuel cell under there where the stock tank fits?
know where you can get one ?
Thanks

I don't know abaout fuel cells but I know that the conversion works casue I did it too. I used the same directions from Obi-wans site. I have a95 and I have put almost 21 gallons in mine since the conversion. Before I could fit about 14.5. I had no lift when I did it and it took about an hour. But I unhooked the fill tube first instead of the vent. (Pay attention to the details)
