does anybody know what tranny was most likely used in the 95-98 chevy 3/4 ton autos with a 5.7 liter engine. Is it still the 700 r4? Anbybody have anything good to say about the 700 r4? What is a good swap for it? TIA

4l60e(electronic 700 r4) no throttle cable it uses tps. Lower first gear than any turbo hydromatic 3 spd auto. Strong trans when updated. the pressure motor in the valve body turn the torx head screw 1/4 turn clockwise for more positive shifts. Replace servo with a corvette servo. it is external. right next too cooler lines. while reinstalling it lube the shit out of the sealing rings. and while pulling the cap after the lock ring the cap, pull out a bit till you see the oring through the gap. pull the o-ring about 1 inch through the gap and the give the servo cover a slight pull just too remove it.

I'm sorry, don't do any of that have a trans shop do it. Didn't notice I walked into the newbie section again. if it is a 4x4 and starts "popping out of reverse and forward on hard throttle. immediatly stop driveing it and take it to trans shop. it will be the snap ring on the output of the transfer case. the shaft pushes forward and the slider looses contact ewith the gear and pretty much spin with the hub. common problem with any np gear driven t-case. Was looking in a mag and you can remove the snap ring and replace it with a lock ring that clamps together on the output. it was advertised for a 231. but should also be available for 242 243 and so on.

3/4-ton can be a mixed bag...

6-lug wheels: 4L60E (essentially an electronic th700) unless its a turbodiesel, then a 4L80E.

8-lug wheels: 4L80E. On par strength-wise with a TH400, but fully electronic and w/OD.

is the 700 r4 tranny that is in the 1/2 ton chevy's really that bad or is it a decent tranny though?

Grteat trans. Just change the fluid once a year at least no mateer how much or little you drive it. Make sure there is a magnet in the pan. or else it will build up on the screen that protect the shift solenoids and clog up your pressure circuits.
