Does anyone know what axle is used in the rear of a late 90's Ford E350 dually van. I work in EMS and our rigs have limited slip rears in and I thought if I could possibly find an old ambulance I could use the rear from it and then I would have a start on limited slip. It still wouldn't be as good as a locker but it would still be better than open. I have a bone stock '86 XJ 2.8L, auto, NP242 and am storing up info for building it up.

from what i have read, they came with Dana 60, 70, or 80 in the rear, depending on what year you are talking about. i didnt think there was even such a thing as a dana 80. guess there is- can anyone back me up on this one? you can look for yourself at www.patooyee.alloffroad.com - go to the bottom of the page and click on the link. it will take you to a list of dana axle applications. maybe that will help.

It's mainly ring gear size (9.75, 10.5, 11") and outright housing beef/weight/clearance. There are also axle shaft differences although all three can be found with 35 spline shafts. (The 60 usually has 30 spline and the 80 can have 37 spline.)

I thought the heavy fords used the 10-1/4" Sterling axle?

I would think that a D70 or 80 would be overkill in you rig. The GM v6 probably would be good for about 140HP. A D60 or D44 would be more than stout.

your best bet Is to find a 44 out of a xj or mj. or also a 8.8 out of a exploder or ranger. the exploder has a nice disc brake system.

The BIG Ferds, yes ferds:D, are now running the Sterling 10 1/2s... I just found that out recently!
MTNBIKEBOY... :rolleyes:If you are going to be replacing your rear axle why not go with an axle that already has a locker already in it:question: I mean, you are ready gonna spend the money right?! If you hunt around, or place an ad in the WANTED section on this board, you might find one with a locker! Some guys are sitting on old gear for one reason or another and might jump at the chance for some cash and much needed space. Just my .02!
Good luck with your project! You picked the best board to hook with! :roxy:

Thanx for all the info. I don't have much time or cash right now I'm mostly just gathering info and storing in the back of my brain for later. Cash and a few tools (welder, cutting torch, air tools) are the only thing that's stopping me from going all out.
