: Off-Road Scout ll
Brawler 11-29-2001, 08:28 AM Any one check out the tweetybird yellow 78/79 scout ll in the mag? Good to see a binder on the cover of anything but ME NO LIKES!! Everything hanges down like two feet under the body (links and stuff) Huge ass tires on 44's. Real clean though.

Exactly, it is on the cover of Off-Road Mag - its a mudder. I have NO CLUE why he built the links that way (looks like the same style as a monster truck). The thing that gets me (soap box = on) is that it is an SOA rig - you don't need links on an SOA rig. Then he kept his front shackle and replace that 'sway bar' between the shackles with a monster peice of metal (who knows what it is). The only ground clearance its got is in the tire rubber, allthe links and stuff are hangin too low.
The body, paint and work looks clean though. I will give it that. Just not my style.

I haven't seen the mag (Off-Road is probably the only one I haven't been suckered into subscribing too by do-gooding telemarketers for the XYZ children crisis of the month..)
.. but some of us DO need links on an SOA rig.
It's called axle-wrap/spring-wrap/wheel-hop. For now, I just replace my springs about once a year and deal with it.. but a link suspension is on my mind to cut down on the wheel-hop and put more power to the ground.
Maybe with a 196 you don't notice it as much.. you need a fair amount of motor to deflect the springs enough.. :flipoff2:
If I were building a mud-runner, I'd have a lot of motor.. and if I had a lot of motor, I'd learn real quick that at least a pair of ladder bars are necessary to keep things in line.
That's at least one of the reasons why you see those 12" lifted Chevys all running ladder bars.. plus it helps keep the axle located under those 8" blocks. :D
Scoutillac 11-29-2001, 10:34 AM Could someone post a pic? I agree a link of anykind is not required:flipoff2:

Scoutillac 11-29-2001, 10:50 AM Is that the stock tie rod on that:rainbow: ride? and what is the deal with that jacked drag link:rolleyes:
TERRA-IZER 11-29-2001, 02:59 PM That truck was in Off-Road a few years ago with 39's and black door inserts. Its a show truck and thats all. And Snoopy, i get alot of wheel hop with my stock 345 and spring over if i hammer it hard, so i could use some type of traction bar, but i try not to get on it much.
Scouter 11-29-2001, 03:56 PM I read the article yesterday; what a POS:barf::rainbow::barf:
Brawler 11-29-2001, 04:46 PM It figures the one scout we see in the mags in a long time is :rainbow: . Hope the get someone eventually who has a bad ass scout.
ScoutDork 11-29-2001, 07:01 PM It looks like your typical East Coast Four Wheeler:rainbow:
Really tall:flipoff2:
I'm impressed though; with the 44's holding up with 39.5's
I want to go to 37's, so it another vehicle that beats the odds. I have Warn FF and front shafts. The links help protect the drive shafts from the rocks, but it will be high centered rather quickly!
And if its a Mud thing, whats up with the Trusses? I hope it floats on top.

Cutch 11-29-2001, 07:06 PM No doubt that it is slick looking, but I would think that on any rock obstacle it would run into problems because of the clearance or lack of issue...Mind you nice not to have any rust.

I don't doubt that.... I'm just stating that crappy ladder bars (although they cure hop) will limit your flex. Linked suspensions like the one pictured (if not properly implemented) also limit your flex.
Links and leafs travel in completely different ranges of motion. To have one AND the other hinders more than it helps. This is why 1/4 elliptic suspensions have a pivoting AND rotating shackle attaching the spring to the axle. It allows the axle to move in a seperate arch than the spring does - and hence, the spring is only providing up-and-down pressure.
The only way to NOT screw up flex while using leafs and convensional links is to use dual shackles (front and rear) on each leaf pack - that way you nuetralize the leaf spring's range of motion and the links easily conform it to their range.
Here are a few more examples of getting good flex and curing axle wrap. Currie's ladder-bar is attached to the frame via a shackle instead of straight to the frame so the link's range of motion is elimiated. Kicker Shocks also help control it without limiting flex because their length is variable (their path of travel is not set).
I'm saying that there are other ways to get rid of axle wrap without destroying your flex.
TERRA-IZER 12-02-2001, 06:53 PM Snoopy, maybe its a mud truck you don't need lost of flex with a mud truck, but do need traction in mud (ladder bars).
Snoopy 12-02-2001, 08:58 PM Youre probably right, but what a waste of a scout!!!
TERRA-IZER 12-03-2001, 02:46 PM Very true, what a waste of a good scout
Snoopy 12-09-2001, 05:19 PM Perhaps I shouldn't have said its a waste, after all we build our Scouts for a different purpose than this guy. I suppose if I was a mud runner, this would be a perfect setup....maybe.

jdjanda 12-09-2001, 11:53 PM I read the article, it works for the dude, he likes it, the links help keep it stable when the :rainbow: stuff is going on in the bed. When your pump'n a buddy you got to watch out for that axle wrap.

LOL. I'm sure if they had an award for that, I'd win it, too.
Didn't you see the part about UGLIEST TRUCK winner?

That was the 2000 award. I need to get a picture of the 2000 and 2001 plaques side by side on the hood of the rig..
.... hmmm.. and put my 2001 RMIHR First Place Finish above/behind the two Ugly Truck awards.
At RMIHR I won "Best Use of Plating"..
yes, I'm :rainbow: and have chrome on my rig. Hub lock ring, air filter housing, chrome-spoke steerin' wheel, chrome tailgate button, 20 chrome lug nuts, and one dented chrome gas cap!
RustoleumWhite 12-10-2001, 10:29 AM You realise Tom... You keep touting that and we MAY just revoke them....... Your giving us a bad name:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Oh yeah, sometimes I forget about that. I wonder if Maulis is sore at me? :D
I might not make it to NWBRU for a 3rd plaque this year.. our state trail ride is that weekend.. course, that would mean I'd have to make sure my trail rig was road worthy by then. :flipoff2:

Yeah, not exactly the most flattering picture.. but look, I'm not wearing any Carhartt! See what happens to my bluejeans?
After I saw that picture, I made a mental note "do not tuck that shirt in" :D

Hooper 12-11-2001, 10:27 AM This is how Clenton Bishop did his big SSII

This seems like a great system. Very similar to what Screech did for Travis.
But, when one side of the axle droops, and moves away from horizontal, it would try to twist that ladder bar. The lack of twist in the bar would seem to limit flex. The shackle setup might have enough flex in the bushings to allow that twist. But, if this connection incorporated a heim joint at the top of the shackle, it seems like that would allow the ladder to twist to the side like it would need to and keep the ladder from binding? I get some pretty good hop in my rear when I am working it hard, and I think axle wrap is the culprit, so I am looking at different ideas for solutions. My 352 ( :) ) seems to have enough grunt to wrap even my xlc's. But, maybe a kicker shock would be better and easier?

Thats pretty much what Currie uses on thier setup.
Orbital Eye's are a good way to allow more flex in the shackle (one could use JohnyJoints or even rig a heim of some sort).
Kicker shocks are my favorite for leaf suspensions, but use Rancho9000s so you can adjust exactly how much you want them to work.
The best answer is to go linked and then use standard Scout II springs with dual shackles on each end.

Ok, lets here it!!
Scoutaholic 12-12-2001, 05:37 PM Typical quarter eliptic setup. Nothing REAL new, just new to me. The leaf spring with 4 links and 4 shackles works just fine. Main reason for changing it is to move my rear axle further back. Back far enough that the shackles would be way out lthere in the way.
