: Suspension input!!!!
Grumpy... 11-29-2001, 07:42 AM  I thought I would ask a question to all of you. What is the best suspension Vs. cost Vs. ease to build for a Bada$$ trail rig?Quarter elipt.,Tim Porters way,YJ's,coils,etc...etc...Two of us from the Bedford Boys Balls Deep Club are thinking of going extreme.Personally I am running 35" tires on a built 1.3 and 5.38 gears.Locked all around and I want to be able to go everywhere and keep the tires on the ground.
The other guy has 31"tires but wanting 33" and he will want to go everywhere I do and he also is locked all round with stock gears.:usa: Thank you for your time.:bounce:
Azrckcrawler 11-29-2001, 08:34 AM I am pretty happy with my YJ setup, from what I have seen I get pretty much the same flex as the coils. But if I was starting from scratch I think I'd do coils for a couple of reasons, #1 your linkages will eliminate axle wrap and #2 the coils are always applying downward pressure on the tires. My friend still amazes me by climbing steep loose hills in his TJ with his lockers off. That little extra bit of contact pressure really makes a difference.

Depends were your priorities are. I don't think you can get the 'best' suspension while maintaining cost and ease.
I would suggest stock rears up front with a revolver, and 3/4 eliptic in the rear with CJ7 front. This set up is bolt on , cheap easy, and has the best flex for the buck.
If you want alittle more work go YJ springs.
1/4 eliptic is cool, but I think IMHO that the front should ballance the rear, and too much flex in the rear gets you into more trouble.
:D
Grumpy... 11-29-2001, 12:11 PM Right now I have YJ's in the rear and 4"Skyjacker lifted in the front.4" missing links all round and Sammy rears in the garage to go up front.I am wanting to do something but didn't know exactly what.Putting the rears up front and revolvers on all corners would be the fastest thing to do but I was not sure if it would be worth doing just that,or doing something different that would accomplish so much more. What has to be done for the Quarter elipt? Is it makeable by a decent fabricator?:usa:

1/4 eliptic works if it is designed properly. There is alot of R&D involved, and trial and error. If it is done incorrectly, it can be down right scarry.
Question? How much articulation do you need?

I started hearing some very bad things about revolvers when I really started looking into them. That's what I had originally thought of doing, but ditched that idea after I heard a ton of bad points about them. Do a search on the General 4x4 page... there is a ton of info there about revolvers. I decided to go with the Trail Tough YJ kit. It is 100% bolt-on and utilizes a Missing Link shackle in the front and a standard "bone" shackle in the rear. I haven't tested it yet, though, because I'm still waiting on my driveline/brakeline extensions and shocks. Pretty easy install, though (after you get the old shiat off  ), and it looks very stout.
Okay, I'm done. :D ~Steve
Grumpy... 11-29-2001, 03:16 PM As far as articulation, with the lifted springs I scored 742 on a 30 degree ramp.I would like at least a 1000 score to make me happy.Mudlite, where are you located?A few of us "Bedford Boys" are thinking of a spring run somewhere out of state.:usa:
High5 11-29-2001, 07:24 PM easy and cheap is to swap in yj's and you will need a anti wrap bar to prevent wrap in the rear. they flex and you can usually find a used set pretty cheap. :)

I have he YJ's on the rear and since the last axel wrap problem I had I did install a single "ladder bar" type device to prevent it any farther.Doesn't even change the articulation I have now.

suzuki w/the HEAT 12-01-2001, 02:52 PM what happens when you get to much rear flex einstein?

How do you get too much? There is always limiting straps and etc. If needed.I have seen some incredibly flexie rigs during the Skyjacker series.

I'm up in Ottawa Canada. Were is Bedford?
When I was running missing links up front and 3/4 eliptic , I was scoring 1550 on a 20 , but never tried a 30 untill I did the coils. Since my score with the Waggy axles and coil front scores 1558 on the 20 and 1090 on a 30, i would imagine 3/4 eliptic is what you are looking for.
Cheap, easy, effective!!!!!!!
