: Safari Gard bumper, d-90 and winch
sachilles 07-14-2003, 12:41 PM Roommate just picked up a used Safari Gard bumper for his D-90(1994).
I think he got a decent deal etc.
Of course he'd like to ad a winch to it. Neither of us have a clue.
(how's that for honesty?)
The Safari Gard site mentions it will fit most 9000 pound winches, listing the warn xd9000 and the xd9000i.
Roommate seems to remember seeing horror stories on the web about mounting winches to this style bumper and that only "M" style warn winches would fit.....this doesn't seem correct to me. As the "m" winch in production that I see is the 8000 or lower.
A M12000 would be too big to fit.
I can see how a winch with an integrated solenoid could be a problem in regards to clearance. One with a remote solenoid should be fine....right.
He knows he'll have to trim the grill etc.
Just looking for some real world experience; specificly problem you might have encounter in this situation.
Thanks,
-Seth
Discosaurus 07-14-2003, 02:00 PM I have a $G front on my Disco - as far as I know, the winch mounting area is the same between the two trucks..
$G made the bumper two different ways - the most common was for "normal" 9000 lb class recreational winches like the Warn XD or the Superwinch X9. This is what I have and the Superwinch X9 (not the one with the integrated pak) fits just fine. I beleive the Warn has exactly the same footprint.
The other version was for real winches like the Superwinch Husky.
The two mount types are NOT interchangeable (without a plasma and a MIG :p) so make sure he knows which way it was built.

chrisvonc 07-14-2003, 02:59 PM Sean,
The SG D90 bumper differs a bit from a Disco bumper, at least when comparing both of mine (1 on the Disco & 1 on the D90) where the Disco (for Warn) bumper has a little more play room to get a slightly different (larger) Warn winch in there, my D90 SG bumper did not.
I had a M8000 originally in our D90 front and this year replaced it with a XD9000i. I had plenty of room to remove the old winch and drop in the new one without even needing to remove the bumper, however the larger winch would not line up with the holes due to a 1/4" edge overhang on the passenger side support of the bumper; directly contacting with one of the side housing bolts on the winch. I had to pull the winch back out and take a grinder to just shave a bit of that edging off. After that the mounting holes lined up and it was in there good. If you need it, I can take a picture showing what I had to grind off if my explanation was not very good. :)
Also I pesonally find that not having the remote solinoid worked out much simpler and neater for me. All I have floating around in the way of wiring now are the 2 power cables running up from the battery.
**Late edit** - Sorry, I forgot to add that he should not have to cut to accomidate the XD built in solinoid. I have enough room the slide my hand down inbetween the back and the grill so teh room is there (again, this is going by my own bumpers experiance and may differ on others)

Jtisdale 07-14-2003, 03:31 PM I had a Superwinch X9(direct bolt on) on the SG bumper Chris now owns.

sachilles 07-14-2003, 03:32 PM Why does everyone call me Sean??? too weird.....seriously, I have an older sister named Shawn....People forget my name then just call me sean....even my mom does it every once in awhile.
I'm not offended by it or anything.....I just think its really weird, I suppose I look like a sean, but heck you've never seen me.
Twilight zone material. Very funny.
Ok, so back to the topic at hand.....I printed out the post for him, I'm sure he'll find it useful. Thank you!
I understood it, but he might need pictures:eek:
Thanks again.

chrisvonc 07-14-2003, 04:38 PM Oh man, Seth... I apologize. I dont know why I did that. :)
I can take pictures and post them although now that Tis mentioned it, him having a Superwinch bumper (which I completly forgot about) would most likely explain the reason I had the grind that little edge and have the room behind the winch.

Chris
Don't sweat it......like I said, everyone does it, it was just twilight zone wierd to have someone do that over the internet.....I think it is quite funny, but I ALWAYS give the person who does it a hard time:p No big deal really.
If you can post pics that would be great. Further research has shown that the warn 9000 series of winch should fit just fine. He just analyze some of the photos of the bumper pre-purchase from the previous owner and you can see a xd9000 sitting in there comfortably...only difference was that it was on a d-110, which I believe has a little less room.
Thanks again.

Dude...
I've got many K-bucks worth of Greg's stuff on my truck and, besides from crappy paint that rusts through in a year of salty roads, I like it all. I think that gives me the right to call it $$$$$$$$G (cuz it was).
Oh....:flipoff2:
