Tmartin 11-29-2001, 10:52 AM Hey Sharp,
are you talking brokerage fees (as in a fee charged on top of pst and gst by the broker who pays those taxes in advance for you and clears customs) or pst / gst? If you ship it by parcel post, Canada Post will only charge you a $5.00 processing fee IF there is any taxes owing (on top of the taxes). Call customs canada to find out if pst and gst will apply, and how they estimate the value of a used item. Perhaps he can mark it as a gift? I bought some used parts from the states and don't think I paid much of anything. Don't ship it UPS, because they do charge a hefty brokerage fee on top of the taxes. Fedex and UPS blue expedited charges no brokerage fees as well, but their shipping is by air, so it cost outragous anyhow. Good only for small light parts you need in a hurry. Don't ship roll cage kit that way!
would have liked to have linked up with you, when you were in the peg, but life is just so crazy these days. Wife and I are planning a new home and have no spare time.

Sharp 11-29-2001, 11:03 AM Tim, i mean the fees that they add over and above the tax.
i guess when they process stuff at the boarder they charge you brokerage fees, now i'm just needing it to come by ground and not get charged brokerage fees.... how do i do that?
Tmartin 11-29-2001, 11:07 AM Just have your friend ship it by ordinary mail, hey a lockright is a small package, and only if Customs decides to charge you the 14 percent pst and gst, will they ding you with a $5.00 service charge. That's my last experience with Canada Post handling ground mail packages from the US.

BillaVista 11-29-2001, 02:20 PM The brokerage fee is not determined by Canada Customs, but by the carrier you use.
Example, I had 2 complete '76 K10 knuckles out, shipped to me from Oregon to Nova Scotia, 2 huge heavy boxes sent regular parcel post. No taxes, no duty, no brokerage fee.
Alternatively, a guy sent me 2 used shocks from New York, he sent them UPS, and UPS charged me $35 brokerage fee...the crooks!:mad3:
Only problem with regular post is it is slow and you have no recourse if it never shows up :(
Inferno 11-29-2001, 11:19 PM I've only shipped a few times.
Once it was marked as a gift, $1.00 value, it was opened by customs, torn appart, and taped back together. (SoftWare)
Second time the parts got held in customs for 3 days. (I thought the brokerage fee's were supposed to prevent this.)
But I didn't get charged the State tax in the US, just GST&PST.
Third time Canada post lost my package for 3 weeks. (I'll never ship with them ever again.)
Fourth time is in progress. UPS Ground 2-8 days.
My $12.95 USD part has become $19.95 US with the addition of somthing. (Don't ask me what. But I think it's taxes and handling.) And then there's still shipping, border taxes, and brokerage fees. And then there's converting the final cost into CDN. It's going to end up more like $50 CDN then the $19.43 CDN it should be.
sfraser 11-30-2001, 06:56 AM What I do and the other people from my Jeep club is get our things sent to mail box etc.. in Ogdensburg NY near Ottawa and just go pick them up when their in a pay $5 to them and then cross back the border and pay the taxes.
Shawn
jeepclub 11-30-2001, 07:47 AM If you have to use a courier company, the yes you will get charged brokerage.
You also may be subject to duty. Although on used parts there is none. But you never know with the customs people. If you live somewhat near the border, have it shipped to that little town (sometimes they have a MBE or something) then go down and get it. Then you will have to pay the taxes (both) when you come over.
If you can get it sent by postal mail then you will save alot more $$$ Make sure they have USED parts written on the box
BillaVista 11-30-2001, 08:53 PM There's no duty on any auto parts now, even if they are new, if they are "made in USA", NAFTA thing.
But you still have to pay GST and PST (or HST).
Bill
Sharp 12-01-2001, 07:55 AM BillaVista, but if you go throught fed ex or purolator, will they not still charge you brokerage?
or are the fees totally nonexistant any more, mo matter who you ship with?
Tmartin 12-02-2001, 07:19 PM Fed-Ex doesnt charge a brokerage fee, their fees are expensive enough. UPS's Expedite Service or any of their air services also don't charge brokerage fees, as they are also expensive on their own. UPS standard service does charge brokerage. It's not for collecting duty, as their is seldom any, it's for them handling the clearing thru customs and paying the Pst and Gst, they say.
Tim
good thread,
I am late on this I know.
UPS Ground hit me up for $15 brokerage fee for a set of Warn hubs that were warranty items. plus $15 in taxes.
in order to clear the items through customs UPS like every other bonded carrier simply hands customs a printout listing the items on the truck.
I worked in LTL trucking and we had up to 60 shipments per truck, UPS Ground most likely has thousands.
do the math on the profit for printing and submitting a trailer manifest that is automatically generated for every trailer as a tracking measure including for non international loads.
Sharp 12-31-2001, 05:01 PM well i have all the info i need to get stuff across....
now i just need something to get across :p cause the lockrite fell through:nuke:
maybe that was for the better tho
