What simpler ways are there to convert a Right hand drive FJ40 to power steering? A friend of mine in the US Navy is living in Sydney and wants to convert an RHD FJ40 to power steering. He is not wanting something too complicated or expensive to get done. Maybe something like the mini-truck box popular here in the states. A saginaw or FJ60 setup would likely be too much work for him. Anyone there able to source OEM Toyota P/S parts? this might be the easiest way... Any suggestions on Good shops to do the work in the Sydney area???
Thanks!

There are a couple of Aussies that hang out on the board. They will probably be in a much better location to help him out than us States' side folks. Sundance is one of the chaps, I don't remember the call sign of the other though!:skull:

Some years (early '80s) of chevy truck had the box mounted outside the frame. On a right hand drive rig the box will be the opposite of the typical saginaw conversion on a left hand drive rig. The box will mount on the inside frame rail of the right hand drive rig. There ya go.
Good luck & HTH.
A right hand drive chevy would also have a correct box. Your friend migh just end up paying to have a shop do it for him. Should cost about $1000 us.

Thanks! I may just tell him to go to ashop and let them hash out the details... My friend was wanting to do it himself, with no welding, which is challenging if you cant find the original Toyota stuff.

Get him to try a few wreckers look for a late fj40 box, it's the easiest way to do it. Macquarie 4x4 are very good with fab work, but they do charge like wounded bulls. Probably be looking at around $1200 aus to get it done
Good luck
like ozfj40 said look through wreckers as late model FJ40 / FJ45's had power steering in the same location as non power steered rigs

Iwas thinking that the factory setup would be the simplest way, maybe not the cheapest, but certainly straighforward...

Late 40 factory p/s is like hens teeth, you pay heaps for the orig setup, but it bolts right in.
The last time I priced 40 P/s was $1800 Aus from a wrecker.

Mine was $700 with a steering column and pump and all. But they do get pricey

Hey Ozfj40,
My friend is in Sydney, looking at FJ40's now. Most everything is without power steering so he wants to find the parts to install it in a truck if he finds one with out PS. Where did you get the parts???
thanks!!!!

Kings Park Wreckers 9622 3444 ;)
A fj55 box will also bolt straight in. The problem is all these are getting a little bit expensive in sydney. Tell him to try wreckers in the country
