Why is it that womens shirts have buttons on the left and men's on the right?? Why do men wear watches on the left and women on the right?? Anyone have a real answer?? I have convinced my wife about the shirts (just had to go to her closet to prove that..) But why??

I remember hearing something about the buttoning being based on when men wore armor.

Most men were right handed so the armor went left over right. This way when someone stabbed at you the sword glanced off instead of going into your armor.

Bingo

Basically - servants dressed women way back when and men dressed themselves. The buttons were on the opposite side for the servants.

Women that didn't have servants copied the buttons to appear more wealthy. It stuck...

I had always wondered about the shirt thing myself. As for the watch, I was told that you wear it on the arm that is not your dominat side to keep it out of the way.

[Edit] I am left handed, I wear my watch on my right arm.

Unfortunately, that is totally wrong. The ratio of left to right handed people in the middle ages was close to 50-50, some family lines actually had more left handers. The fighters were often lefthanded, and warrior training assumed you were going to fight left-handed. Go to any castle in England or the islands. The main spiral stair cases all turn so that as you go down, you turn to the right. Therefore, if you are defending a staircase, meaning, going down, your left arm is available, your weaker right arm is protected, and the attackers (going up the staircase) had the opposite, their weak right arm was exposed, and the sword arm was restricted by the spiral.

Check out ant old armor. The right side was heavily armored, because it was unused. The same with jousting armor, the lance was held in the left hand.

"To keep you from wearing them"

Oh yea.. Now coming from someone who lives in West Virgina?? Is that not where the tooth brush was invented.. If we invented it up north it would of been designed for more than 1 "tooth"

Oh yea :flipoff2: Jealous?

I'm going to have to disagree. Staircases were built to be defended from top down by right handers.

Well, OK, 50% of the castles are designed for left handers. The fact is, that 1000 years ago, left handers were the majority in that area.

Anyways, are you left handed? Are you Irish? If not, then I don't take your statement to have any validity! :p

Well that sure explains a lot. No wonder they couldn't figure out how to create electricity or how stay alive for more than 40 years on average. They were using the wrong hand the entire time! :shaking:

btw, I'm ambidextrous (sp?) so I'm no in my Right mind either. :p

Uh, uh. I've been to castles all over Europe, Ireland included and I've only seen one that spiraled the wrong way. It was a trick one that lead to nothing so that the owners could beat the crap out of the guy dumb enough to go up a left spiraling stairway when he tried to come back down. I believe it was in the walled city of Carcassonne, France.

There are MANY, and once again, if you are not personally an Irish left-hander, I have no trust in your statements. Begone!

I did get my left arm tattooed in Dublin, does that count?

Perhaps your right, err left, 1000 years ago 50% of the spirals went left and then some right handed Scotsmen (my ancestors) went and fixed them all so it would be easier for me to unbutton dresses after the weaker lefties were weeded out.

Ah, I see. Left handed Irishmen still exist and thrive, because we don't need to unbutton dresses.

We just say "bitch, take off your clothes and get on me!" and they do. Too bad you Scots still do it the old fashioned way :flipoff2:
