: 700 R4 to SM465 . . . .

How much is involved in a 700R4 to SM465 conversion? Will I be able to drop the auto+torque converter and slip in the 4spd+clutch or is there a lot that needs to be changed? I know it's been done before . . . will the 205 that was on the auto bolt up the the 4spd? Are the bellhousings the same? If the 4spd will bolt right in, then the hardest part will probably be installing the clutch pedal and master cyl. What about the cross memeber(s)? I've found a pretty sweet truck but I doubt I can live with auto. If I can do the swap for under 1g (including sale of auto) I would do it no problem. Sorry if this is a dumb question. Thanks much for any help-

Not much to it really...I went from TH350 to 465. Only a few things that aren't bolt in/on affair. If you run manual linkage, you'll need to cut a hole in the floor for the pedal rod to go through. You'll need to make a bracket to weld or bolt to the frame for the z-bar to mount too, I suppose you could try to cut one off the frame of a truck at a pic-n-pull. I don't know whats involved with the hydro linkage stuff. Oh yeah, to replace the pedal assembly, the steering column needs to be completely removed. You'll have to either cut a hole in the tranny tunnel cover, or get a cover from an original 465 truck. Might have to re drill holes for the crossmember. If your tranny cooler is the in-radiator type, you'll have to plug the inlet and outlet ports and remove the lines. Belhousings are the same. I don''t think that the auto version 205 will bolt to a 465. A good percentage of the 465's you'll find are 10 spline, in wich case you'd obviously have to have a 10 spline 205/203 and the appropriate adapter. 30 spline 465/205 combo's are pretty tuff to find. If you already have the 465/xxx t-case combo, then you could do it for waaaaaay less than $1K.

What year truck are you planning the swap for?

Thanks for the info. Can I PM you if I have more questions? I probably wouldn't do it for about 4-5 weeks. It would be a '70 C20. I found a remanufactured 465 on ebay for $500 so I guess I'd just need to get the 205. I don't know if $500 is cheap or expensive or whatever but in any event it isn't bad. Maybe it would be worthwile investigating a 5-6spd? We will see. Thanks again.

You can get one way cheaper here in the sale section. If I recall correctly, I saw a whaole set up from flywheel to output yoke for like 5 bills.
