A friend of mine has a 1997 Rodeo LS 2wd, 4cyl, with manual tranny. What I need to know is which tranny she has so we know which fluid to use. I talked to some mechanics and parts people and they said that if it is the T-5 Borg Warner tranny then it takes ATF(Dextron III), but if it's any other tranny it takes motor oil (5w30/40). She had her oil changed at a Jiffy Lube recently and they decided to change her tranny fluid and filled it up w/ dextron II (guess this stuff is pretty rare and old). She started hearing a whiring noise under acceleration like a gear whine. She took it to another Jiffy Lube (she was traveling) and they said it should have Dextron III and drained and refilled it. So now we just want to know for certain which tranny it has, which will determine the proper fluid. Is there a site that I can enter the VIN into to check and see what she has? I got the three digit tranny type code off the sticker on the firewall but the service department is not open till 8 tommorrow. They said they might be able to identitfy it with that. Sorry for the long story. TIA.
