Gotta be Warn. Superwinch and Ramsey are cheaply made, and Milemarker's are a joke.

Have you seen Milemarker's new electric winch for 400.00? I think it is a Ramsey copy:confused:

[I like my 1945 braden PTO winch. Once you use one of these its hard to go back to electric. Had a 12000 warn it worked OK for about 50 pulls. anyone want to trade a 8274 for the 12000?

I have the 8274 on mine. Only used it once to pull me and it pulled without a problem. Other time was tryong to flip a guy back over and it just drug my truck with all 4 wheeld locked and moving the rocks i was wedge against. Of coarse my decision was easy. I stole it off of my dads truck :D :D

I will agree with the thought of Mile Marker, hell I won't even use their lock-outs either. But, as for Ramsey, the REP models SUCK!! The RE's on the otherhand are tough winches but slow, their CE models are tough as nails and about as good as any winch on the market, their only draw back is their slow pull rate. I really prefer the old Desert Dynamics winch, 10,000lb pull, 12 spool, steel bull gear, worm drive, they are fairly slow but will pull a house! Only bad thing is that they are getting very hard to find now. After Pierce bought them out, they started using a brass bullgear which I really don't like.
Don't get me wrong, the 8274 Warn is the standard for all winches to be judged by for their strength and pull rate.

Warn HS9500
It is super fast no load and fast with load and low profile. I would say it is essentially the same speed as a 8274. The 8274 has more cable if that is an issue.
I had a ramsey before the warn and it is was an absolute joke compared to the warn. The ramsey was slow, used serious amps, and finally smoked after moderate use.

Oh yea, the HS9500 is cheaper than the 8274.

One more item,

you want a winch that will keep up with your rig when your
winching (pick up slack). The big capacity winches are typically slow and are overkill for normal 4x4's.

for electrics I like warn, but right now I'm looking at a ramsey industrial hydraulic (RHP 8-s) which is an 8k planetary hydraulic with a 2:1 rating factor because it's marketed for industrial usage, so it's actually capable of pulling 16K single pass. line speed is killer on it too 50 FPM first wrap, 58fpm 2nd, 67 fpm 3rd, 76 fpm 4th, and 84 fpm on the top wrap. It even holds 170 feet of cable. the only downside is that it needs a pump capable of 2500 psi and 15 GPM to hit those ratings...meaning a hydraulic pump, instead of a p/s pump.

I have a Ramsey DC-1?
Obsolete since the 70's..
Slow but never lets me or others down.
I also own th model BEFORE this which i plan to use as a trailer winch.
Woody uses this winch as his main pull...
Says it works well.
Some times, old heavy stuff works wonders.

I have a super old 8000 lb Ramsey on my landcruiser, and I've seen it out-pull an upright warn (not sure of the model) hands down. Mine was slower but didn't give up as quick. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I pulled an expedition out of a ditch and it didn't even slow down.

i have one of the old ramsey re8000's you speak of. the reason it didn't slow down when pulling the expedition is because if it had been any slower it would not be turning. :D i took my ramsey off and replaced it with a m8274. the ramsey is going on the trailer.

the biggest drawback is that it weighs 132LBS - this makes it extremely difficult to manouver around by oneself while building a bumper, and puts a hurting on jeep and toy front springs... I had my springs built before I got the winch, but had them built to handle an extra 250# for when I mounted it and designed the bumper....

HS9500i on my rig. Love the fast line speed.

I will be getting a M8000 for the rear.

I like my milemarker. It's really slow, but it has never failed. The worst thing about it is changing speeds. It is hard to explain if someone is working the winch for you.

I would like to go to an 8274, but only cause it's faster.

Well, ya didn't have an option for me. I get stuck all the time, but do not & will not have a winch. I play exclusively in the mud & we do not use winches. A 200HP tractor & a 250' steel cable take care of our "stucks" ;)

I ran TTC up in OR a couple years back with a Ramsey 9k ProPlus. I was amazed to see the difference in speed between my winch and some of the 8247's. Heck the Warn 12k on Mudrak's FJ45 was faster than mine. That next winter I found a sweet deal on a HS9500 and have been VERY happy with it.

Ive owned both a warn 5000# and an 8000# winch. both i got used. the 8000 had a burnt up motor when i got it, (cheap) and i replaced it.. worked great after. no problems with either unit.

the older "rep 9000's" werent very good. you can never go wrong with a warn.... BUT:

I have the Ramsey Platinum plus 9500 winch, and its faster than the warn HS 9500 at every weight except no load. the 4.8hp motor uses amperage similar to the Warns, and seems to be well constructed. AND it came with 150' of cable. its worked without fail the dozen or so times ive used it... its definately NOT a bad winch at all.. and $200 less than a comparitive warn.

( I wanted a warn, but WON this at EJS. not complaining...)

I have an old 8274 that is an awesome winch! I bought a trailer for $2k and it had the winch on it. I put it on my rig when my old XD9000 roasted and it's still pulling strong! And I still have the trailer for those roadtrips.

My other rig has a Milemarker and that thing is definitely slow, but it'll pull all day. It has its own dedicated pump and I think that helps a lot towards making it pull better. I just bump the idle up and it'll pull anything!!! :D :D
