: Tattoo idea feedback please
Rerard 07-20-2003, 10:24 PM So I have always wanted a tatoo but never knew what I wanted to get. I want something with personal signifigance rather than something that just looks cool. When someone asks me about it I want to have a story, so here is the idea that I just came up with earlier today and have been running by all my friends and family.
Its inspired by the recent break up with my g/f of 4 years. Basically the thing that inspired me about it was that one of the reasons we broke up is that I put my work first and kind of took her for granted. This is the second time I do this and its a mistake I never want to make again. Regardless of if we get back together or not, next time im in a relationship that is going well I want to remember how I feel right now so I dont do the same thing again.
So I want to get a tatoo on the right part of my chest that symbolizes my feelings at the moment (profound sadness/alone). I figure the right part of my chest is a good spot because its near my heart and I will see it in the mirror every morning. I thought something good would be a howling wolf or maybe a wolf licking a wound. Then I was also thinking that when I get married it would be really cool to get another wolf on the other side kind of symbolizing that my 'lone wolf' isnt alone anymore. I got a buddy who is a really talented artist and happens to have been in a similar situation not too long ago so Im hoping he can try to think about how he was feeling at the time and put that emotion into the design.
Another bonus about this is when chicks ask about it and I tell that story and the purpose behind it I think they will dig it.
So what do you guys think?

That is is stupid to get a tattoo that reminds you of a girl you just broke up with.
Motornoggin 07-20-2003, 10:28 PM I think you should get one that says Billy Bob.

The point is not to remind me of the girl, its to remind me of the mistake I made and to never make it again.

right, i stopped reading right here. i think tat's are pretty lame
except for one case. this is not the reason to get one IMO.

I didn't need a tat to remind me of that. It was painful enough. Although I will agree with the basic premise. One of my tats is a symbol of a painful injury (although a physical one, not a psycho one.)

Dude, I just realized that my friend has a similar tatto, don't know what it symbolizes but I do know that chicks really dig it. Sooo, I say go for it! Be sure to show it to the ex, when she sees that wolf she will realize just how much she ment to you. I'm thinking something like this.
Blinky Bill pulled a part from your post that is NOT a reason to get a tattoo. Remember its PERMANENT...feelings change
My tatts remind me of times in my life, not because of any specific timely significance, but because of when I got them. I'm not exactly sure I'd wanna have a visable reminder of that though. It's hard enough to forget as it is.

If you're trying to get it close to your heart, doesn't it make more sense to put it on the left side of your chest....um, where your heart is? ;)
Frankie_Bones 07-20-2003, 10:40 PM These people obviously havn't been in love, I rember when my ex dumped my ass, havn't stopped drinking since. Just get hammered, sketch out a wolf, and get it tatted. I wish I had, don't have any money now so a tat is out of the question. It will remind you of the one that got away, and prevent you from letting it happen again!

ok thanks... :)
Roxywheels 07-20-2003, 10:43 PM I don't think that he's trying to remind himself of the breakup, but more to remind himself to put relationships first. I don't see it as a painful reminder but as a good lesson that he's learned. :roxy:

Ummm, perhaps if you're looking for something near your heart you'll stick in the center two fingers up on your sternum. That's exactly where your heart is.

Dat's what I'm thinkin. Then again, I'm pretty particular with my tatt's. I have one I'm not so happy with so it'll get covered with a sleeve. That one sucks. ;)

Ok it doesnt have to be that specific :flipoff2:
I agree with the 6 months, but in the mean time I also want to get feedback from as many people as possible.
Frankie_Bones 07-20-2003, 10:50 PM Hammer down a few and then decide! It is proven that you do your best thinking, after throwin' back a few!
Ya know Frankie, I've never ever been in a shop that'd ink when you're drunk. First you make stupid decisions second you bleed more.

True, the booze does thin the blood out abit. Fuck it dude, just get a tattoo gun, get smashed, and do it yourself. Now thats true love.

I'd hope the studios like that are on their way out. Probably the same shops that decide new needles are too expensive and that they should reuse them.
Rerard, I'd definatly advise waiting the 6 months and remember good tattoos aren't cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good :D

Yup. Same reason that you don't want to pick the scab.

Yep, from another recent thread. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=160516&highlight=tatoo

Damn, red... go figure. I got a black one the guy never worked in well enough. Kinda pissed me off, he owned the place and his apprentice did GREAT work on the one on my left calf.... I'll just get this covered up when I get a sleeve. sheesh.

your missing the idea.
withamc 07-21-2003, 12:03 AM No, I'm not. I know way too many people with tats that somehow have a connection to a former lover and I can almost guarantee that any new girlfriend will have a problem with it. Sure, there's a few who won't be bothered by it, but most will.
Remember, they're a lot cheaper to put on than they are to take off.
pipefitter 07-21-2003, 12:08 AM You must remember that you will have it for life . You can have it removed if you have alot of money . I can tell you that tats can hurt like hell . I have one on my back . I placed mine so I could wear a tanktop and not have it seen . Remember poeple will judge you because of it . Right or not it will happen . I've met poeple who think of all poeple with tats as scum . They didn't know I had a tat before they made there statement about tats . So just think long and hard about it . And if you do get one make sure they clean the tat gun and new needles . By the way have you checked out the prices of tats . Not cheap for a good one .

If he in fact wanted to woo her over again there's a helluva lot better things than getting a tattoo to do it.
Like mabye not putting work first or taking her for granted anymore?
Rerard 07-21-2003, 12:46 AM Getting her back with this tatoo is not the goal, its something I want for myself. Anyway im done explaining it, some of you get it and some of you dont and thats fine, thank for the feedback either way (both positive and negative).
On a side note, is there a way to get a custom fake tatoo? I mean what better way to find out if Im gonna like it than wear the fake one for a few months?
Rerard 07-21-2003, 12:49 AM if by that you mean my first tat then yet it is sir, if I get it that is.

Okay, then by all means feel free to ask any generic tattooing questions :D Big thing, very very important. Research the artist that's doing it. Check out his/her portfolio and talk to clients if possible. You're gonna shell out good $$ for the work, make sure it's gonna satisfy ya :D And make sure you get along with them too, ya could be sitting there hanging out with them for a while ;) Other than that make sure the shop is CLEAN in general and that you watch them put the sealed needles in the autoclave and take them out. I can not stress that enough. Choose wisely and enjoy :D

That's one way to do it. I am one of the sleep on it people. Youre emotions are high right now so you are more likely to do something without thinking it out first. Find what you want and hang it on you're wall for a few months. If you're not sick of it after 6-9 months go get it.

ya its called a Sharpie
$1.25 for 2 have fun :flipoff2:
usmcdoc14 07-21-2003, 05:45 AM but seriously wait a few months as you shop around and look at diffrent shops. by the time you find a shop that you are happy with and trust it should be 2-3 months and THEN figure out if this is realy what you want.
there is only one tattoo on my body that some girl had anything to do with. and it will be the only tattoo on my body that had anything to do with some girl.
and that girl was my MOM ;)
Frankie_Bones 08-19-2003, 08:25 PM Did you get the tat yet????
Damage, Inc. 08-20-2003, 07:14 AM Personally, I recommend getting a big vagina tattooed on your chest...right down the middle. That way, every morning you'll look at it and see what *IS* important!! :flipoff2:
That's all I have to say 'bout that.
Hey Newbie,
How about you getting a tat on your forehead that reads "Don't pull my ears, I know what I'm doing!"

I hear "Infamous Butcher" is a real popular tat :D

Maybe a dump truck would be more appropriate:flipoff2:
Entropy 08-20-2003, 08:38 AM First, I have never asked anyone about a tat. Fawk what they think... it is your body, and your tat, and the only person that matters in the decision is you... period.
Second, the only reason you need to get a tat, is because you want one. The only reason you need for the kind of tat is because you liked it... Unless you're in the military, you can do whatever the hell you want and everybody else can kiss your ass. Even in the military, all you have to do is clear it with your CO (which wasn't difficult in my case).
If you are confident that it is what you want and that you will like it plastered on your skin for the rest of your life... then go for it.
I DO agree that you should wait a couple months. I know some people get away with good spur of the moment tats, but it is better overall to wait and be sure that it is what you want.
Roxywheels 08-20-2003, 08:41 AM So is this the same GF or did you get a new one already??? :roxy:

Don't get it. The only thing worse than getting a love's name tattoed on ya (IMHO) would be getting something inked in that reminded you of one that got away. I agree with the waiting advice but make it a year;)
From the sounds of things I don't think you'll need a tat to remind you anyway. But I also think that in 10 years the feeling will fade. If it won't really matter in 10 years, it isn't important enough to get a tattoo for.
