I should know this but haven't had to think about it in a long time and plain forgot. What year, and older, vehicles in California are exempt from smog regulations?
Thanks.

And diesel ones.

Does anyone know what if a 74+ gas rig is converted into diesel?

if you convert a newer than 74 rig, no matter what rig to what type of engine you still have to get it signed off by a referee.
they're pretty picky! <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce2.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce2.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce2.gif" border="0">

I DO know that you cannot covert a vehicle that must meet smog rules (i.e., '74+) and put something under the hood that would be smog exempt, such as a diesel. Must meet or exceed what came from the factory for that vehicle. Went through that learning process when I restored a '67 Bronco years back and stuffed a 351W into it. Now, by legislative magic, it's exempt, and all the work I went through to get it smog legal means nothing.

So heres one for ya:

I have a 76 FJ 55 with a trashed body and a 73 FJ 55 clean body. Not sure about the frame. When I do the body swap can I register it as a '73? I don't have the pink slip on the 73 (it was mainly a parts vehicle) so how would I go about registering it... Any thoughts?

At least in CA, registration is based on the frame. So you want to do all you can to use the '73 frame (smog free). Can't you get a salvage title on the '73? You may need some proof of purchase like a bill of sale or a receipt.

Can't I just "say" its the 73 frame if I have the 73 body on it? There aren't any numbers on the frame itself are there?

I suppose I can find the guy who sold it to me and get a bill of sale.

There is on a scout. I took the 4" grinder to them and made them go away!
