: Will I break running 31"s?
mud-magnet 11-30-2001, 11:10 AM i'v been running 31"s for a wile now and my last zuki had 33"s and i never broke an axle, but i have my rear diff welded, will it break easy? i'm also thinking of going 33"s by next summer, i have the stock engine, rear springs up front, 15x8" rims, 31" trail masters.......i'm not SPOA yet, but will be soon enouh, i just started building this in Sept.......
thanks guys!!!:D
Gozuki 11-30-2001, 07:44 PM W/ 31s and 5.12/lockers, grs1, I twisted the rear axle off at the splines, and broke a birf/hub. At 33s, 2 rear axles, 2 rear lock-rites, 3 birfs, front wheel bearings...Now w/5.38, 35s and a grs2 and d44 w/detroits, I have only broken a tcase! It was way worth it to me to get rid of the suzuki axles, but pick your poison...Mike
headrush812@earthlink.net 11-30-2001, 09:16 PM :cow:  :smokin: :usa: :rasta: I have 31"s on mine 4 two years no brake any parts yet :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Gozuki 11-30-2001, 09:34 PM I did suprise, big bear, calico, shredder, and the rubicon on 31s and 33s....Now I can do the big trails without waiting for the snap.
squirrelman83 11-30-2001, 09:34 PM I run stock axles with 33x12.50's. I have only had it about 6 months, but I have not had any problems (axle related  ) yet and it has hit some pretty tough Colorado trails. I have f/r lock-rights, 4.56 gears, 4:1 t-case, and spoa. I would think you will be fine, but I guess it also depends on your driving habits and terrain. ~Steve
Gozuki 11-30-2001, 09:46 PM Driving habits and terrain is everything. I've seen 10 bolts work w/38s (gently rolling down street), and broken 60s w/33s (huge boulder/huge scout/huge right foot). I believe firmly in crawl, I do most of my driving at 800 rpm...But I always go for the fun lines, I think if your going to build it, use it. My wife thinks I shouldn't wheel my daily driver:(
mud-magnet 12-01-2001, 11:51 AM thanks guys, i'll be leaving my stock axles in and maybe going 33"s and i'll be going spoa very soon with a 4.16:1 t-case........and when(if) i break i'll get toyota's.......
I ran 32" Swamper SX's, which are basically 31's.... I think they're only 30.5" tall. I broke twice, a Birfield and twisted an axle off at the splines. The first breakage happened when the front tire wedged down between two rocks, so tire size wasn't really to blame... the axle would have broken regardless. The second break was caused by my right foot. I was determined to get up a rock, after hitting it several times with more throttle each time..... POP!
I switched to 33" Goodyear MT/R's a few weeks ago. I broke both front axles on my first trip out with them.:( I wouldn't say that I was really giving it too much hell, just getting too much traction I guess. :p This wasn't your average trail though. It was harder than anything I've ever seen. I'd say probably the toughest trail in Tennessee. ALL of the trucks that tried it the day before broke.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is: Breakage can happen even with 31's. It all depends on the trails, your style, and LUCK!
zuk88 12-01-2001, 08:30 PM I'm on 31"s with 3.73s, 4.1 case, and a rear locker. I don't run the old girl to hard, but had to back up out of a sluice with the wheels turned once or twice. I kept waiting for a snap but got lucky. At SOTR I saw a few broken axles and birfeilds up close which made me start looking for Toy axles. Next year at SOTR I won't be so afraid to tackle the big rocks......on 33"s:smokin:
mud-magnet 12-02-2001, 11:49 AM ok thanks guys, the rails up here arn't extremly hard, but from what i'v heard about the trails on the main land(5hrs drive) they hit EXTREME.....and i'll be heading down there in the summer......
i'll try it for now......and i'll be going to 32-33"s by summer......
mudlite 12-02-2001, 12:31 PM I didn't break anything untill I went 35's. You will have no problem with 33's in the east coast of Canada.
:D
