Twelve Cuban migrants attempt to cross the Florida Straights Wednesday, July 16, 2003 in a boat fashioned out of a 1951 Chevy pickup truck driving it within 40 miles of the United States before they were found by the U.S. Coast Guard (news - web sites) and returned to Cuba.
Travis Waldher 07-24-2003, 08:22 AM Thats the FIRST thing came to mind this morning when I saw that article.
Grandpa Jeep 07-24-2003, 08:36 AM That's kind of cool. Too bad the Coast Guard sunk it.
rusted 07-24-2003, 08:38 AM Hey, if they're that resourceful, I hope they make it!

I clicked on the slideshow link. It had the following description to this picture.http://us.news1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/rids/20030724/s/1059056803.2818605103.jpg
Cuban migrants trying to reach the U.S. coast in Florida ride in and on a 1951 Chevrolet truck, converted into a marine vessel with air-filled drums for flotation and a propeller driven off the driveshaft for propulsion, July 16, 2003. The U.S. Coast Guard (news - web sites) Cutter Key Largo repatriated 12 Cuban migrants riding in and on the vehicle back to Cuba after they were notified by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement aircraft that they had located the floating flatbed truck. The truck was sunk as a hazard to navigation. Picture taken July 16, 2003. REUTERS

fj40guy 07-24-2003, 09:44 AM Damn.... wish they would have kept the Chevy Truck... pretty good condition!!! :(
Very least they should let the team compete on the SUBMARINE edition of Junk Yard Wars? Perhaps with a Citroen D21? :flipoff2:
Tom :usa:
Grandpa Jeep 07-24-2003, 10:06 AM I wonder how long it will be before the cubans start building submarines to get here.

LIKE A ROCK! :D
nakona 07-24-2003, 12:06 PM I can't help thinking that anyone who is resourceful and talented enough to come up with THAT idea and obviously make it work, is EXACTLY the kind of immigrant we WANT.

In addition to all that, they got the stones, and confidence in their work to hop on it and point it out to open seas... in hurricane season...
Mikel 07-24-2003, 12:57 PM They seem to have done a MUCH better job than any of the junkyard wars competitors... :D
Ya, those same creative invaders are going to come here, and get right into the working community.
More like put all that creativity toward crime and screwing the system.
Before we praise them for trying, don’t forget that they did try to enter the county illegally. Maybe we can feed and house them for a few years at no cost to them.
cowmooflage 07-24-2003, 01:59 PM Gee, I hope they took the time to drain all the fluids and make it evironmentally friendly first. I would hate for Geen Peace or the sierra club or someone like that to get a hold of this kind of information. They could sue the gov. and have the entire ocean closed:flipoff2:
