: Flat towing behind a small truck?

Would a CJ be too heavy to flat tow behind a small truck?
The truck is a Dodge D50 V6 3.0 liter and 5spd.. It's small but has some power and great brakes.

Hell NO!
I don't care how good the brakes are on your little D50, it just does not have enough weight or wheel base to deal with a CJ behind it. Your CJ would be pushing the D50 sideways at every corner.
There have been several threads in the tow rig section about flat towing and the inherent hazards of it.

Thanks, that makes sense. Didn't want to find out the hard way.

Like I said, go check out the tow rig section. A few threads there about people that did find out the hard way.

Remember that towing class you took when you got your drivers license?.....That's right, they don't give ya one.....so it's up to the individual to "learn"....to figure out that YES, it is possible to SAFELY tow that IF I take precautions....if I reduce my speeds....if I double the distance between me and the asshole in front of me. I can tow it....I know this.....I know crapola about most other folks. Hope that helps. That felt good. :)

Bullshit... Can you "learn" to be as safe as possible under the given conditions?... Yes. Is the act of "safely" flat towing under those given conditions (< or = weight tow rig) actually safe?... Nope. VARIABLES. You can only go SO slow and leave SO much distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you, before someone else capitalizes on those "safe" conditions you've created for yourself (ie: How often can you maintain 10 car lengths in front of you before another motorist occupies it?) If a car makes a last second left in front of you... Could you brake or dodge it with double the weight? If a kid runs out in front of you... Could you brake in time for him/her with double the weight? If some jackass cuts you off on the interstate and slams on the brakes... Could you stop in time or make the emergency lane change without a jack-knife? My 1/2 ton ext. cab Chevy's 5,500 lbs wasn't even close to being up for an emergency situation while towing my 4000 lb boat with the brakes inoperable... Eat it ZUK!!! :flipoff2:

I figured it was a bad idea but still wanted to know what could happen. I knew the stopping would be a major thing but I didn't think about turns or flat tires.
I couldn't find anything in search before I asked, with that perticular detail of flat towing with a small truck. Even the "tech" only had info on trailers.
Once Robert enlightened me I was gonna delete the post but I figured now there's something for search on the subject.
Thx

I am the king of flat towing, only because I'm too cheap right now to buy a trailer. :emb:

F150 Supercrew towing my FJ: Pulls it fine, but I feel some push braking in corners, makes me want to pee my pants.

'99 FJ100 (heavyfawkinbiatch) towing my FJ, same feeling as the 1/2 ton Ford:(

Flat towing sucks

I'm right behind you MD.

I'm flat towing a TJ behind a F350 Dually and I can feel it trying to push it around corners. If I'm towing my Yota it's really noticable. My brakes are more than strong enough to stop me on a steep grade (D50's can not). It's just not safe to tow with a light rig.

I flat tow a Samurai behind an Isuzu Amigo. Tow rig outweighs the towed probably 2-1 but my problem is wheelbase. I feel a little push in corners, its real fun if I go in too hot. Braking is obviously affected but Ive done a few thousand miles like this.

My friend flat tows his CJ5 with an Exploder V-8.
All was fine until the Jeep got a flat. It almost pulled him off the road. He saved it, but I think he did his own laundry that night.
