What's the trick to getting the cone washers out of the steering arm and allowing me to remove the steering arm?

I borrowed this picture to show the cone washers that I'm speeking of.

They have a split or seam in them and I have had good luck with putting a fine tip chisel in the split and giving them a whack. This loosens them and makes them pop up.

i always soak them with penatrating oil alot, then hit the arm right next to the "cone washer" with the biggest ballpeen hammer i own, (sometimes alot) when they break loose i use a small straight slot screw driver in the split to turn them out.

i sometimes use a 1" diameter punch to hit the arm in different locations also........

I have a had a hell of a time trying to remove the stupid orginal stearing arm. I have tried heating it with a torch cutting the arm in half and trying to unscrew the studs none of whice have worked!!! Anyone have any ideas?

Use an old deep socket that you have laying around which has a slightly bigger ID the the cones OD.. Put the deep socket over the stud and conical washer then with a nice healthy bit of hammer love it'll pop right off.. Obviously your socket may take a beating so dont use the best stuff ya got..

Oh, and good luck!!

If it's really grimy, put some penetrating oil on them, then use a brass drift or hammer works great for me. No damage to the treads either. ;)

I usally do everything listed by the others, and just keep switching around and around, as I get fed up with the one that I am doing. Towards the end, I usally just get a BFH and get my aggressions out!:D

OK I got them out. I just took a big hammer and hit the steering arm hard all over. I also sprayed WD40 on the cone washers a couple days ago. Eventually one of the cone washers got a little bit loose and after I got this one out the other two worked loose.

OK now that you already have got it I'll give you the super slick trick. If you have air tools here it is. Take a air hammer with a pointed tip on it, Hit the center of the studs with it. The cone washers jump up, even after being tighted there since '79. Knocks them loose like nothing. Then you just slide the cones off and then your arm. Sorry I didn't catch this thread sooner, but don't worry I did it your way many times before.
