Need Your Help & expect Words of wisdom
I Have a cj 7 & just today the T-176 tranny go stuck in first. Now the Shifter will not disengage out of first. I checked the clutch, and it seems to work fine ( disengages and engages). I also checked the t- case it work fine (shifts in to 4 wheel low/ high to 2 wheel no problem) So the problem is in the tranny.

What would cause the Tranny to Stay only in first gear?

Has any body had this problem and how did they fix it.

  HELP

Mine got stuck in reverse once... what happened was the shift rails and the shifting forks just get out of sync. You gotta take the cover off and make sure its in neutral and put the cover back on. The bitch is gonna be getting the cover off, cause since the forks are engaged and so you're just gonna have to jimmy and wiggle it etc etc. But it is possible.

When I did it, I thought I'd dropped the tranny. I was so happy I was shitting pearls when I took it apart and found nothing in pieces. :)

Very Common with these trannies, on of the reason I consider them POS's. To "fix" it do like is said above. To keep it from happening your going to have to find out what is wore out that alowed things to get out of line. I literally kept a 1/2 and 9/16" socket/wrench in my toyota in case I wheeled with anyone with these trannies. Usually its the shift forks/rails or even the whol top plate that is woorn out. Good luck, I would take this chance to look into a tranny swap, it may not cost much more then fixing what you have

Thanx for all Your help, I did fix the tranny. The problem was in the stifter. A c clip was missing & after puting a new one it work. I did have a good look at the tranny and it will need a rebuild some time in the future.
