I recently bought my first fj40, a 74. I have been incredibly amazed at how great the vehicle is. Little rust, straight body, and it runs good. It has the original F engine that appears to have had nothing done to it in its 91000 miles. I have gone over it, rebuilt the carb., replaced starter and fuel pump and did a thorough tune-up. The only problem is that the compression is a little low, not terrible, but it is going to need a top end rebuild. So now, finally to my question. I have a 302 that I rebuilt not long ago, before I got the cruiser and would like to know the possibilities of putting that in. I have heard of a lot of guys putting 350's in their cruisers, but not many with ford conversions. I would like to know what the pros and cons of each are. I would like to put the 302 in just because I have it and it is a good engine, but if I have to reroute steering columns and stuff it might be less of a headache to put a 305 or 350 in. Also, anyone know much about a Warn JT4 winch? I have contacted Warn Industries, but they only told me that they no longer produce parts, nor do they service these winches any longer. Thank you all.

One word, Andrea www.ih8mud.com (http://www.ih8mud.com)
All you ever really need to know about Cruiser mods - well the basic ones, anyway. The guy that was involved in a lot of esoteric mods doent seem to hang out here anymore
if ih8mud.com doesnt jingle your spurs then ask away. BTW, the moderator, dogwalker has put 302's in Cruisers and they are a straight forward swap. Couple it to an NP435 and a Toy 3 speed tcase and you are stylin'

I would check Marks' Adapters out of Australia for the adapter to the stock tranny. The Ford conversion seems to be more popular down under.

hey andrea!
if i were in your shoes i would call advanced adapters in paso robles, ca, and have them send you one of their landcruiser conversion guides. 1-800-350-2223 talk to ken at ext 516, he's helped me out plenty in the past. they also sell the "mark's adapters" from australia and their brochure has been updated to full color pics of different conversions. i have used their stuff on many rigs and it always worked out really well. also, if you're going to run a 302, put the efi on it, you'll love it on the trail. little more work and money but totally worth it in the long run.
hope that helps, georg
