First off: Shit yeah!

But I was thinking of someplace less hectic than the Rubicon. Most FJ55s aren't setup for that trail. How about something mellow and beautiful, with some optional hard stuff. I had a great time running Cow Mountain (http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/cow20001113/index.html) up in Ukiah with Pacific Mountain Cruisers earlier this year. It's good any time of year, not real technical, pretty.

Or maybe we could do a run to somewhere else in the Sierras that's still good for a stocker 55. Some friends of mine just got back from Deer Valley (http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/dvbyjer/) and their pictures are beautiful. They say a stock wagon could get through.

I know of at least 10 FJ55 owners here in NorCal, with email. I'll start putting the word out, but if we want to get lots of FJ55s it has to be a mellow trail.

Maybe we can do a "warpigs" run on the con soon. :-)

Man, I doubt my 55 will be ready by then. Maybe if I finish my 40, I can just tape a mural of my 55 to it. Think anyone would notice? <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Morgan, great pics and trail reports on Deer Valley and Cow Mountain.

I vote for Deer Valley! (Not that my vote counts for much mind you!)

So what date are we shooting for? 12 – 14 October as fc187 suggests? Let me check with the First Shirt this weekend and get her approval.

there is nothing hectic about the rubicon trail this time of year , the rocks are all stacked from the jambo and a run to buck or spider is not hard at all even for a mildly built 55 , sure a stock 55 might have some trouble but i was thinking more on the lines of a hardcore 55 run , with all built rigs .
you guys can form a mild run anytime to hh, fr, dv or any easy place .. i cant justify taking my rig to an ant hill to pose , no offense but come awn morgan your rig walks rubicon and right now it's ten times easier then when you last went through .. you would not believe who much the trail has changed it's not tough ...
besides you guys have already done a mild all 55 run last year ..
come awn war pigs

ok i just got a confirmation that if we set up a hard core 55 run that one of the big rags would cover the run . but they need to schedual their photogrphers so i need to get back to him right away ...
what's it going to be guys are we going to line them up in a parking lot for a picture or are we going wheeln ?

I could go 8-9, 15-16, 22-23, not 29-30, and then the cleanup is the weekend after that I think.

Alan, how many FJ55s would show? You, Don and me. The Knorr brothers would for sure. Maybe W? That guy from SoCal Eric Lindt with the red/white 55 might, but that's a long drive on short notice. Who else? I don't think Bill wants to wheel his "Leaning Lady" hard. Last I asked him, I think he said he wouldn't take it on the con. I don't know a lot of FJ55 owners that would.

Let's see if we can find some.

You'd get way more 55s on an "ant hill" run. But I like Black Sabbath.

on a hardcore run you dont want 50 rigs it would be to much . i was thinking no more than 10-12 rigs .. i am sure we could put that many together .. you forgot joe sommerville , mudrak knows the guy with roadkill and there are more heck we could get shacky's ig ready in time for that run he wants to wheel it ....

morgan
08-30-2001, 10:21 AM
Joe Somerville's 55 is very nice, but his 35s rub driving on the road, and he's told me several times he'll never wheel it. I've asked!

I think you're looking at maybe 4-5 rigs.

But I'm for it!

Screwzer's in!

Anytime in October is good!

Agree with Morgan on Rubicon... can't quite do it in my 55 till I replace my front springs (had to go back to stockers after breaking lifts in Utah). Final blow was trying to do SierraTrek (hence the need for my Transfer Case swap)

Slightly milder than Sirra Trek will do it for me.... but then I'm a bit crazy

Also does anyone have a seat (Alan, Morgan, Don) i want to go and it does not sound like you guy would let me bring my 40. I will bring it if you guys let me.
Chose a trail with a few hard things on it so we can get some extreme 55 pics. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

ok i had a little talk with morgan this afternoon about this and he thinks rubicon would be great it's really not hard guys it's late in the season the rocks are stacked and it's almost paved .. there has already been two fj55 events for the mostly stock trucks time has come to give it hell on the trail ...there are two hard spots on the trail and both have bypasses come awn..
time to vote for rubicon
i vote for the con
i think morgan is for the con

I would love to see every 55 in California at one place, one trail, at the same time.

BUT,........

jackson has the BBQ going on for that.

I say this.....lets plan on doing another BBQ next spring for ALL 55 owners. maybee plan it a wee bigger. perhaps send out invitations via the mailing list.

for now,.......fuck it, lets do the con. It would rock to have even a half dozen pigs all lined up, thunping and banging and screching allong. fuck that would be a sight to see and I would be honored to take part <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

wherever we go, lets talk date. I think this will dictate who does and doesent go just as much as location. I would think mid October would be the safest bet. that should give everyone plenty of time and wouldnt interfere with the cleanup. whatcha guys think?

Who's Mr. B? Brimmer?

That guy in SoCal - Eric Lindt - is w/o email. I'll call him.

You know, there's a guy in Auburn with a bobbed FJ55, caddy 500ci motor, big dana axles, etc. Know who I'm talking about? He was on the cover of one of the 4x4 mags a couple years ago. I don't know how to get hold of him, but that's a sweet rockcrawler 55. Anyone here know who I'm talking about, and how to get hold of him?

OK, people doing the run:

Alan Lunghi
Don
Greg Dyche
Luke Porter
Morgan Fletcher
Screwzer

Maybes:

Bill Jackson
James Spohn

BTW, I posted about this to the LCML a couple days ago. Greg Dyche said he'd make it. He's in Sacto, has a SUA FJ55, went to Moab this year.

I also sent mail to Whatley. Man, it would ROCK if he made it.

Its been a while sence I fu**ed with my wiring but I think the rear half of your rig is seperated from the front via a plug.so if the damage is in the front half, you can leave the rear alone. Im not familliar with a 75 but I know a 76 harness is different than the earlier ones in the sense that they follow a different path through the engine comp and there is allot of wires you wont use, so that may screw ya up more than help.
I say dig in, it may not be as cripy as it seems. you may only need to replace and repair a few wires. I do have one tip for ya, if you are going to be doing allot of work under the dash, pull that front seat out and maybee even pop the stearing wheel. sure you can do it with these things in place but cramp quarters lead to short fuses and fiddelingwith all those wires takes a little patients <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

Question for ya on the 55 run

Last time I ran the ‘con was in 1977 (in a FJ40 – major rocker damage from the sluice).

fj junkie said the rocks were stacked from the jamboree ... it’s almost paved, and that both hard spots have by-passes. I’m concerned about body damage, as unlike morgan, my pig lacks rocker protection. I hope to have it in the future, but it won’t be in time for this run. Should I expect body damage? (I know that is a loaded question, as it depends on lots of factors, but is 55 body carnage expected?)

shit happens ! it depends on a bunch of factors how your rig is set up , who is spotting you , what lines you pick , some people can pick lines and other smash sh!t ..
even with the season as late as it is with all the rock stacking .. you can still get body damage ..

Yep!

No way around it, a wagon will probably get fresh dents on the Rubicon, especially w/o rocker protection.

Then again, Eric Lindt has a great 55 that he has let the boulders re-shape. See if you can find his rocker panels! :-)

http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/rubithon2001/img_0561md.jpg

That 55 has been through the rubicon lots of times, and I don't think it looks too bad. (His rockers are sort of compressed under the doors.) He's SUA, running 33" tires and I think he might have open diffs.

A good short-term solution might just be to get some really beefy angle iron and bolt it to the existing rockers, until you can do something more elegant.

Being the new Story Editor for Toyota Trails, I'm basically GUARANTEEING you guys some good coverage on the magazine, provided at least one person in attendance takes pictures with good old-fashioned 35mm film! Don't forget the regular camera, one of the downsides of the "technification" of 4-wheeling, which allows us to see pictures on the same day of the run, is that people aren't taking enough print/slide photos, and unfortunately, that is still the standard for print media.

Take some pictures, let's get those pigs in print!!!

Works for me... although not as spectacular as when Wejacks had the Pigathon in Davis... the directions he gave us sent us through a typical suburban neighborhood... There were pointing fingers everywhere... moms came out to protect their children. Twas a wonderful scary sight as 6 or 8 55s in varoius stages of Mad Max came roaring through.

I have two fj55's in the yard that could do the trail if about 20 or so guys help come put them together in the next week. Tony's has been here for about 3 years so already spring over with 350 and power steering tubo 350 just needs a coil to run and brake master. Good luck on the run. If you guys would get some FJ 45s We could have a real cruiser run. Talk about room to haul things.

I've put together a couple FJ55 runs in the past, coordinated on the landcruisers@tlca.org list. One was to Hollister Hills and one was to Frank Raines. We didn't _just_ have FJ55s tho. The most 55s I ever got on the trail at one time was five. At Moab I organized this photo-op:

Pigs at Moab (http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/cm2001/pigs_at_moab.jpg)

I didn't get to wheel with any of those 55s. <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">

As far as whether other cruisers or 4x4s should come with us on the 20th, I have mixed feelings. An all-55 run is cool, but after last week (specifically the 11th) I just want to get out on the trail with some friends and get away.

I respect Alan's desire to make this a special, 55-specific run. I'll be there, and I hope all the pig owners that want to make it get there and do the trail with us.

Here's one cool 55 I saw in Moab.

http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/cm2001/fj55_pickupmd.jpg

It's one of the working vehicles for a guide company in Moab. I asked the guy driving it for the story, and he said they were towing a heavy boat, the boat tipped forward, crushing the back roof of the 55, so they cut the roof and rear pillars, folded the roof down and made an extracab FJ55 pickup out of it.

Cool!

The shop in Moab is called Tag A Long Expeditions. The guy who owns the place is named Bob. He came to my rescue this June, he had a 60 that the engine was toasted so he sold me a driveshaft off it so I could get home. Don't expect him to sell you any 55 parts though. His intent is to someday restore some of those 55s. For him the LC progressively moved down hill. For his business the 55 was perfect, 6 passengers, vinyl floor, and it would fit a raft in the back. 60s were OK. And the 80s didn't suit any of his needs. The cargo area wouldn't fit a raft even without the rear seat and the leather would have been wrecked in a week.

I wish I could attend this 55 only run. I have 55 blood in my veins. Over 100,000 miles of my childhood was in a 55. I learned to drive in a 55. I shot my first deer off the hood of our 55. I shot my first antelope out of the rear window of the 55. Note: This was legal as I had a handicapped license. I was on crutches after hip surgery.

As you 55 owners know, finding a nice one is next to impossible these days. So I bought a 60 instead.

Is it possible to bike the Rubicon? I'd like to attend without imposing in a non 55 Cruiser. Or would I be better off hiking it. I have this overwhelming urge to attend in person. I don't think pictures and video will do it justice.

Later!

Yeah, the guy from Tag-A-Long helped me get a water pump when I was in Moab. FC, I think those are the only 55s in town! Yeah there's a bunch o' 55s up here, but shhhhh... I don't want them knowin' folks dig 'em. I got my eye on a few that I think I can talk the owners into letting me have for cheap!

I got my clean body and rolling chassis for only $300.

Oh, yeah, this is Yuppie town, so rents are pretty high and jobs are scarce.

If you're on the landcruisers@tlca.org mailing list, or you read <u>Toyota Trails</u>, you know who Mark Whatley is. He coined the term "Iron Pig". I just talked with him on the phone, and he is
coming down from Alaska to California to do the FJ55 run on the Rubicon,
10/20-10/21! Sounds like Max Balmain is coming down from Seattle too.

This is going to be epic!

If you've got a trail-worthy FJ55 in the western US, be at Loon Lake dam
between 8AM and 9AM on Saturday, the 20th.

Let's go all the way through to Tahoma.

T-shirts are good. I think they should be black t-shirts, Iron Maiden style. My wife is in the promo biz. I'll talk to her and Alan about it.

Rocker Protection? We don't need no stinkin' rocker protection! My rockers are damn near gone they've been beat so many times. I'm driving the "practise" body right now. I have a clean body in the back yard that I'm preparing for a swap (with Rocker protection)

Eric Lint let the rocks fold his rockers out of the way, and I think his 55 has been through lots of times.

Is there someplace safe to park my 60 at the trailhead? I'm thinking of driving it down and hiking the trail in and out with the 55 group and then maybe sticking around on Sunday/Monday and driving the trail in the 60 at that time. My wife wasn't too keen on me thinking about pulling the drivetrain out of our 40 and stuffing it in a parts rig 55 that a friend has for one weekend of wheeling. Parts rig meaning no doors, no axles, no motor, no tranny. Lots of work for a weekend. Plus trying to trailer it all the way from Idaho. I thought of driving our car. But if I'm driving that far to see the trail, I'm going to drive too.

Later!

Hmmmm.... Eric's rockers look ALMOST as bad as mine, except I've managed to save my doors.

Sure, you can park it at the base of Loon Lake dam, right at the beginning of the trailhead, or further back on the dirt road leading in to the dam.

I bet you can get a seat no prob, and maybe even some driving time.

You're coming down from Idaho? Cool!

I've done it, and that 'baby head gravel is easy in a rig, but a bone shaker on a hard tail....

All I need now is a bit of channel stock for a front bumper.

I plan on being at Loon sometime Friday night, but I bet some won't show until 8-9 AM Saturday morning.

T-shirts? I haven't even talked to my wife about them. Our best bet right now might be to get someone to make iron-ons for t-shirts with their ink-jet printer. (We don't have a printer.) I think there's a kit that will let you make iron-ons with an HP inkjet printer.

No free time, here.

BTW, anyone got room for a passenger or two? I may have overbooked my seats. I can jam 6 inside for the ride down, but it would be hard to manuver on the trail

It is very responsible of you to identify and fix any remaining week points at tee minus seven days, Don!

I ground the axle housing yesterday and put in a minitruck birfield. New header too. All I really have to do (knock on wood) is an oil change and hook up the heater components.

Alan, is W coming down? Luke still in?
