: sled pullin advise?
gunracer1 08-04-2003, 08:58 AM anyone here on the board every play around at a truck pull? i am entering my dodge this weekend and i think i have the general idea what i need to do. and my clutch should be up to the task. i am just fishing for some ideas. i am going to block the suspension if they will allow it and get my hitch as high as possible.i am planning on 3rg gear low range and just roll out on it then flog it. and to hell with the egts. mike
78Jimmy 08-04-2003, 09:01 AM What kind of tires are you running, and what class truck.. I'm assuming 1ton Deisel..
In most of the compitisions around here diesels do fairly well in stock class. Auto's are generally perfered as they shift themselves. Just remember not to pick to high of a gear as when you hit the end of the track you'll power out..
gunracer1 08-04-2003, 09:10 AM 1 ton dually dodge 4x4 380 or so rw hp and 900+ torque. the tires are just some ap's nothing special. mike
bigNATEŽ 08-04-2003, 09:20 AM on the cummins manual trans I have always heard 3rd gear in low range.
BTW we have a thread on a sled pull on plowsite

Like any other Motorsport, there are a few "tricks" to know of. I used to pull my M715 in some local street class pulls, and had a great time. With a stick, I too worried about being in the right gear for the pull.NOW, keep this in mind. "IF" you do not make it 75' (on a 300' track), you can rehook, and try again;) . With my gas engine, I knew I had to be pulling at least 3500 rpm by the time the clutch was fully out, and I was rolling. One track it hooked up so good immediately, it pulled the motor down to like 1500:eek: I knew I was geared too high for that pull, shoved the clutch in at about 50', then got to try again. With the right gear, (2nd,low) I went 255 feet. Good luck and have fun:D

steve gerstner 08-04-2003, 05:51 PM The best final ratio is 26 to 1, you need to know all your ratio's in your trans. and the "T" case and the rear. Trans. 2.76 X T case 2.72 X rear 4.10 = 30.78. If deisel, you will need 22 to 1 steve differential emg. inc.
jstarnes 08-04-2003, 06:03 PM I seem to remember reading on TDR that most guys with manuals do the 3rd gear low range 2000+rpm clutch dump and then hammer down screw the egt's I would say maybe play with the pump AFC or slide the plate all the way (if it already isnt) thats prob what I would do if I didnt have 24 valves
:D
gunracer1 08-04-2003, 06:08 PM i thought about grinding my plate to a #0 and use a valet switch, that should get me right around 450 hp and 1000+ torque. i am thinking real hard about water injection just to cool it a bit, i will be way out of the turbo's map. i have a nv 4500 to a hd 241 to a 3.55 rear end with 235x85x16's. hell it will be fun either way. mike
weedwacker 08-04-2003, 06:25 PM Fab a bracket that hanges off the front drivers side frame rail that will hold a few hundred pounds. (like 45lb plates from the local gym) Take everything you do not have to have in the truck out and stack the plates up to bring your truck up to weight. And whatever you do, don't let a ford beat you!:D Keep us posted on the results.

I would use a "fooler" insted of a cut off switch so you can have just a little more fuel if you need (fooler is like a controled leak in the line to the afc so you can fake it into seeing some boost but control how much boost just an idea )

FUEL lots of FUEL!
mudtruck44 08-04-2003, 08:38 PM I don't think it is legal to lock your suspension. If not here is a way to cheat:D - Take some old shocks and weld them up at ride height. Throw boots over them and no one will know.

I have seen a guy who had kinda like revolvers in the rear and under load the hitch would lift 5-8 inches (inturn loading the tires)
great more squat/anti squat talk:flipoff2:
Lifted Cowboy 08-04-2003, 08:57 PM Weld them shocks up REEEEEAL good
gunracer1 08-05-2003, 07:30 AM i am pretty sure they will not allow weights on the front of the truck, i carry 2 to 300 pounds of chains and boomer in the rear all the time. i would probable be better off getting the suspension solid and just use the power i have now. but you all know how it gets, quit addictive. i am going to bump the timing up to 16.5 this evening and see how that feels. and i might weld up a pair of shocks, just for shits and giggles. mike

those are now illegal in most pulls i've been to.
