Hey guys, I have my 440 and my 3.11 first geared auto for sale over on the Mopar page. Check it out! I stuck it on the Mopar page "cuz the Binder Boyz usually tend to like their 345's. Usually. If not the motor is sweet and will drop right into a ScoutII. You just have to change out the Scout auto case for a Mopar case. Let me know if you are interested. It belongs in a Scout.

Got a price? $$$$$$$$$$$$

twistedmetal
12-08-2001, 08:51 AM
No, actually I haven't decided what it's worth. I guess it's worth whatever you want to pay. I stuck about $4000 into it less than 40,000 miles ago. Tghe motor will include everything from the 141 inch K&N to the Miloden oilpan except an alternator. I had a Premier Power Welder on it that I am going to keep. I am definately taking trades. I need a Detriot locker for a 44, some 36inch SX's, some YJ springs, whatever else follows along those lines. I will tell you, it'll probably go kinda cheap, just make me some offers.

How about some parts specs?
You know....brand/pt#'s/etc.
Kinda difficult to offer a price on
an engine with unknown parts plus 40 thousand
HARD 4x4 miles.

thanks

Well, I'm not a professional assembler, but I did plan on running this motor for the rest of my life. And I still might if it doesn't get sold. Everything in the motor was basically Federal-Mogul, Clevite, ARP, Weiand, and Moroso. It has a Mopar Performance electronic distributor, and actually, the only thing that Idon't remember the brand of is the cam, lifters, and valve springs as they were a matched set.
I'm not trying to make a fortune off of it, just need some cash to set up my new project and because I don't have a place to put it. Just should me an offer. I know it's a pain in the ass this way, but I don't know what a used motor is worth. I know I've stuck about $4200 into it and I can find you a thousand people to vouch on its worthiness. Here's my e-mail if you want to do it privately.

Well thats a good start. Basic rebuild stuff.

I assume you mean Fed/Clev bearings,arp bolts
(how much of ARP? head/rod/crank/exhaust),
Weiand intake manifold but which one???? model#/name.

How about the important stuff like:
yr/casting block(its on the left side right
below the heads towards the rear)
head casting ##'s/stk/pocketport/fullport
intake brand/model #
carb brand/model #
Steel/cast crank/std/.010.020 under rod/main
piston brand/model#
rods/stock/aftermarket brand/model#
piston/pins/rods/crank balanced assy/not balanced
camshaft/spring/lifter kit/brand/model#
waterpump/stk/aftermarket brand/model#
valves/stk/stainless/aftermarket brand/size in/ex

Don't mean to be difficult but without the above
information its like buying a car when the owner
only says there are four tires on it period.

If you spent $4k then you must know what you
bought right?

40kmi on a hardcore 4x4 is time for a basic rebuild again.
Minimum ring and valve job.

Thanking you in advance

It IS a basic rebuild. I am really glad you like to know stuff like pocket or full port, but if that difference is going to make or break a deal then you are buying the wrong motor. You need to be calling up Merlin or Brodix. You SOUND like you know a lot about motors but you don't seem to remember how much it costs for a BASIC rebuild on a Chrysler big block. It is NOT a race engine. And I'm not selling it as one. I mean, C'mon, Carb #? I said it was a Q-jet and was told it was from a 427 'Vette. It has a two year warranty and it works. What else do you need to know? The intake is a dual plane Action Plus. And NO, I do not know the brand or part numbers of the pistons. It was all in a nice little kit that came from a speedshop called Northern near the town I live in. The cam, lifters, and valve springs I had special ordered for my intended use and NO, I do not remember the brand or part numbers. I do know that the lift was .420, duration was 208/208, lobe separation 110*. That is what I have written down on the back of my reciept. Oh, and rods and mains were all standard.
The engine is originally out of a 73 Imperial, the heads were the good ones with the extra water ports, but had cracks so it has new heads. NO I don't know part numbers. If I remember right, at least the valve springs were from Speed Pro and it was all one kit. The rebuild kits total was $975, not counting the Cam, lifters, valve springs, or timing chain which was a double roller. NO, I don't know which brand. I do not know what brand of valves were used. I know they all had to be replaced and were something like $5.00 or $6.00 a piece. And NO, it is not time for a BASIC rebuild. I ran a compression test and the motor is still brand new. It had #145 in every cylinder, give or take only a pound or two, but they were all VERY close which I heard is a good thing if not rare. When I say it has 40,000 miles on it, I am including all Fourwheeling ever to have taken place in the last two years. I live in a small town. I live about 12 blocks from work and drive it everyday. The trails farthest from me were only 13 miles away. I drove it there and back. It has never been redlined. It has never been so hot as to boil over the radiator but it HAS gotten hot. Who's engine hasn't? It has never inhailed water. I used Valvoline or on occasion, Halvoline, if that matters.
I don't want to sound like a total jerk, but it sounds like you just want to kick my tires. I am offering a GOOD, well running, Big Block Chrysler. The only troubles I've had are with the Aftermarket ignition. I didn't understand how to mess with the adjustable advance and make gains. It has a Flowkooler waterpump, which I believe I put in the ad, but don't remember. It has a Mean Green starter that is acting like it needs to be replaced or cleaned. It has a Jacobs High Energy coil. It needs plug wires, bad. I am even including the 14" by 6" K&N.
If you would like a price, fine. I would like enough to buy a set of coil over shocks. That's between $1200 and $1600. ~Cody

Hello there,

Well now that you have supplied some information
it really helps.

Otherwise its like a blind date.

Its not that I have a vast knowledge of engines
but thanks for the compliment anyways....smile.
But now that you mention it I am a master mechanic
and a quailified factory trained Dodge & Viper
mechanic at a Dodge Dealership.

I just really have this thing about wanting to
know what I'm plunking my money down on.
Seems perfectly natural to me. Don't you want
to know more about a car you're going to buy than
just it has four tires? I thought so.

As far as 73 Imperial heads....well they are smog
junk....second year....anemic 8.0:1 cr.
But since you bought new ones then you probably
got a better designed replacement head if you
bought from Dodge.

So it seems like you really have some idea of
what you plunked your $4000.00 down on. Good...
it just took a little coaxing out of you.

And now since you've finally come up with a
ballpark price I'm willing to make an offer.
Unless of course you're convinced that I'm still
a "tire kicker"...smile.

The last engine I bought about a month ago
from Texas cost $80.00 to ship band strapped
on a fullsize pallet.

I'll take you up on that price of $1200.00
plus $100.00 added for shipping.

Since you haven't had any offers either here
or in the for sale section ......you selling
or keeping it?

Thanks for your speedy reply although you could
have just put down the specs without all the
gobbly-goop inbetween.

Merry Xmas and Happy New Years

PS It seemed like a pretty nice ScoutII that
you had before you parted it out.

It was, a nice Scout. It was awesome to say the least. Itr would go anywhere I aimed it. The problem was it trashed the trail behind me as I went. The trails up here are pretty tight. They are also very pretty. I recently ran a really cool trail in the Black Hills that was breathtaking. It was in a deep ravine with trees laid down over the top that had been there a while. It was really cool. By the time the Scout got through there, every one of those trees was on the ground behind me. I also have a daughter now and wanted a rig that I could more readily put a top on and keep warm.
Anyway, on to the motor. The heads weren't factory Dodge stuff. Rather, they weren't an upgraded head, just a set of decent heads that were in good shape. I had them redone with a 3 angle valve job, and new everything other than the rocker arms. I built this motor as well as I new how with as much information and suggestions as I could gather. The only things that I know are wrong with it are that the Mopar ignition needs some knowing hands, it needs plug wires badly, it could use some bigger jets in the carb, and it will need an alternator. If I think of anything else, I will gladly let you know. I'm not "trying to make a buck" off of anyone. I just need to get it out of my garage now before it gets covered in grinding dust or rusts away in a corner.
When I said $4000, keep in mind all of the little stuff that adds up quickly. That stupid Milodon oil pan(do you know how hard it is to find a 4x4 oil pan for a BBC?) cost me over $200. Then all of the little crap like the Jacobs coil, the high flow thermostat. the waterpump, the adapter for the spreadbore Q-jet, the Ignition, the odds and ends that really hurt a wallet.
I'll take $1300, and I'll throw in an un-opened set of steel head gaskets, a factory 4 barrel intake, and all the other stuff I can find. A friend of mine has some "commando" heads that I assume need to be redone for $200. Do you want them? I believe he said the year was 1968.
I am concerned about the shipping. Where do you live? I sent a package down to Durant OK 2 weeks ago that weighed #290. It was large(rollcage, seats, radiator and fuel cell), but it cost me $170.
Oh, is this going into your Scout II? Would you like me to include the motor mounts I used in mine? If so, it keeps the tranny mount and driveshafts right where they are.
Give me your address, and I'll try to get a shipping cost for you. You don't, by chance, have a business we can ship it to, do you? I am going to ship it from my work and I can get a discount to another business. Oh, and C.O.D. doesn't work. They wanted $720(!) to ship it COD. Nuts.
let me know. Also let me know if there are any more questions you need an answer for. I'll try to get one for you.

Yes it is going back into a ScoutII. I just want
a temp engine while I build a stout 440.
As far as oil pans for 4x4bbc its just a standard
rear sump pan. on ebay = approx 60-70.00.
New from Dodge = $89.00 (my price) however
still available 24/7.
The shipping company I use is "Forward Air".
You can find them on the Internet and get
their number local to you. You would be shipping
to their San Francisco Terminal Dock. They are about two hours drive from me.

My offer stands.

If you are serious then email me directly at:

afm19@pipeline.com

otherwise hope you sell soon it so you can get your shocks maybe in time for Xmas.

thanking you in advance

PS. Out here in California you would be castrated
by the other fourwheelers for what you did to
those trees. We fourwheel but we also take care
not to destroy what mother nature has taken years
to provide.

Didn't you read my last post? THAT is why I shut the Scout down. Damn. Granted, the trees were already dead, but I can't even stand rock stackers. So seeing trees behind me was a bad feeling.

I will keep my motor.

Twisted, sorry you had to put her to rest. I guess if the Scout trashed some trails a bit cause they were too narrow, the suzuki family should be a good choice. BTW-this from my perspective; When you build something as cool & involved as you did people generally give you a hard time(envy ). Oh, and of course cause this is the POR site :D

twistedmetal
12-23-2001, 06:28 PM
You know, you have a very good point there. I can't remember walking around being pissed off because of some jerk I chatted with on the internet. I'm starting to wonder why I keep coming back. I think I'm gonna go to the "For Sale" board now. I am going to visit someones thread, act like I'm interested. Then I'm gonna insult them, act like I am the GOD of building what they are selling, offer them some dirt and a shiny nickle, and then insult them again. Hey Scout II, you just made me not miss my Scout quite as much. Fawking Jurk.
Thanks for the compliment Red.

Yeah, I noticed the, ah, friendly head bumpin'. And I don't mind a little guff, when it is on a light-hearted level. :flipoff2: But man, I had NO idea I was talking to THE MAN of the century. The sole creater and engineer of the Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth 440 cubic inch displacement engine.
By the way, anyone have any ideas how I can ship a 600 pound plus motor across the country for under $100? That would mean that for another $300 I could just mail my rig to Cali, fly down and go wheelin! I'm all over it!
OK, that's probably enough steamin', Thanks for the compliment Josh. I appreciate it.
