Just heard something about it on Glen Beck, but I didn't hear where it was. He did say they (ELF) posted a 12ft. banner claiming resposibilty for the damage... and Glen said "this group is more of a threat to the U.S. than Al-Queda"

Damage estimate in University City arson case jumps to $50 million

By Mark Arner
STAFF WRITER

August 6, 2003

The damage estimate from last week's arson fire that destroyed a five-story residential complex being built in University City more than doubled yesterday to $50 million, officials said.

The initial estimate placed the damage at the 206-unit building at $20 million. The new figure makes it one of the most costly arson cases in county history.

Added to the earlier estimate was a 100-foot crane toppled during the Friday morning blaze. Construction workers had estimated the crane's value at $7 million, but officials yesterday did not specify its value.

Further adding to the loss was the discovery of additional damage to a concrete parking garage.

Estimates do not include such economic impacts as wages lost by construction workers idled by the blaze.

Yesterday, several dozen construction workers were allowed to return to the site.

The complex that burned was part of the 33-acre La Jolla Crossroads residential and research center development. It is planned to include 1,500 condominiums and apartments between the Westfield Shoppingtown UTC shopping mall and Interstate 805. Plumbers, roofers, drywallers and heavy equipment operators were among those who returned yesterday to work on other parts of the project.

The fire was set about 3 a.m. while three construction workers were sleeping at the housing-complex site, said Capt. Jeff Carle, spokesman for the Metro Arson Strike Team.

Security guards have since been hired.

"This is going to be one of the most secure sites that I've ever heard of," Carle said.

Authorities still do not know how the fire started or who started it.

Yesterday, investigators confirmed that the fire was a case of arson.

"There are no accidental sources in the burn area," Carle said. "We also have located some evidence that indicates an incendiary act.

"Someone, some persons came on this site with the intention to burn it to the ground," he added.

A team of at least 80 investigators from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies reached those conclusions while poking through the ruins Monday afternoon. Carle said the investigators will now focus on who started the fire, and on what they used to start it.

Carle declined to detail what investigators are finding at the scene.

Twenty agencies are taking part in the investigation, including the FBI, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team, the FBI said.

The investigation remained focused on the militant group Earth Liberation Front, but the possibility that others were involved has not been ruled out, said FBI spokesman John Kingston.

A banner reading "If you build it, we will burn it," with the initials "E.L.F.," was found at the site Friday. An e-mail sent from the group to The San Diego Union-Tribune later that day stated the banner "is a legitimate claim of responsibility by the Earth Liberation Front."

Earth Liberation Front has claimed responsibility in the past for torching ski resorts in Colorado, luxury homes in New York and federal property in Oregon as protests against urban sprawl.

ATF spokesman Marvin Richardson said he is not aware of the militant group being involved in any previous fires in San Diego.

Authorities said anyone with information about the fire should call the FBI at (858) 565-1255, or Crime Stoppers at (619) 235-8477.

Damn!

I'm going to do a serious search for a photo my pops took in Vail the day of the lodge fire in '98. Saw a unique Toyota pickup with Oregon plates on it in a hotel parking lot morning of the fire. Guy was set up for independent camping, solar panels and all on the rig, Pops took the pic cause it was so out of place looking and unique. I remember it was covered in mud and thinking that it was odd he was at a hotel considering the camping capabilities of the rig and all the free places to park in nearby forests, always thought he could have came to town after the arson to be out of the surrounding forests and to watch the news about the damage. I got the picture finally about a year ago but never forwarded it to the ATF, I hope I can find it now. Cool thing is the pic shows the plate clearly, so if the rig is no longer his or exists the plate could be traced.

My first day of work at the resort was that morning as Two Elk burned to the ground. Turned even the local eco freaks against the greater eco movement since they attacked something that was enjoyed by all.

Fawking idiot ELF retards ended up destroying more of the environment since the resort re-built Two Elk bigger and better with tons more trees. They got a shiny new lift house and improved the lift after it was burned too.

Screw ELF!

beat them. Beat them severily, then through them under a moving truck, then tar and feather them, let it dry, pull the feathers off one by one and then throw grenades at them and bury the peices in a swamp. :flipoff: elf
