I've got a new XP Pro machine deployed and I'm having trouble getting a domain listing to change user accounts. I would like to add a domain user to the machine in the 'power users' group, but it will only show the local machine. When I try to change location, it won't list the domain.

I am loggin on to the domain, and seem to have domain privledges, so whay can;t I list the domain as a 'location' for user accounts? The PDC is a 2k Server box

any ideas?

Is that an Active Directory box, and could it have anything to do with it?

Are you logged on as a DA?

It's not active directory, and I've logged on as Administrator at the local level, AND the domain level. I also added an entry to the lmhosts file to preload the PDC, etc just in case it was loosing something there.

Microsoft sucks!

Is the machine on the domain? Only time I've had this problem was when either I or the machine wasn't on the domain.

i just went to control panel/user accounts/advanced tab/advanced button/groups/power users/add

there's a From this location: box, click on locations and choose your domain.

i hope that's right. :D

Yep, it's a member allright, and logged in. I have renamed the machine and re-created the domain account in case there was a SID issue, and still nothing. Shows up on the server as a domain computer too.

This is starting to piss me off. :D

That's it, I can't get the domain to show up there. It only lists the local machine name with no drill down :(

Thanks though

can you manually add the domain user? IE \\domaina\user ?

tried that but it keeps searching and won't let me proceed. I have tried 'domainname\username' and even 'domainname.local\username' for kicks.

I might try to just add her to the machine locally, and match the uname and pwd with the domain if I have to, but this sucks so far!

Erich on the Select Users and Groups box, what happens when you click on the Locations button? On my xp machine that is on a network, it pulls up all the domains available on the network, then Click the advanced button and then the find now button and it will return a listing of all the accounts on that domain. Select the name you want and then the Ok's and you should be fine.

Have you checked the event viewer for anything out of the ordinary?

Has the machine been on the network long enough for DNS replication? (It takes about 15 minutes here but I have heard of longer)

You could try forcing replication to your BDC's

That's the thing, it won't show the domain listing there. Only the local machine

It's been up and running for a day now, and there are no BDC's on this domain.

I'm going to check the event viewer (duh, should have started there sooner!) :D

Got it! Woo Hoo!

Had to force DNS to the PDC, and also set WINS as static. Woo hoo! now it seems fine as wine! Just in time too. off to the surgeon for my hernia!

Thanks for the help everyone!
