I ran across this the other day. Maybe we will have another source for high pinions in the future. It looks like the axle in this picture might be for the New Dodge that is coming out.

I thought Dodge was going IFS in 2002/2003 with the 1/2 tons and in 2003/2004 the 3/4 and 1 tons would follow.
I think I read that in a Four wheel mag.

Where does it say high-pinion? The Dodge 2500 and 3500 will be straight axle with the new body in 2003. They are going with AAM axles. Probably similar to the crappy D60s they use now.

Pete look at the picture and you can see it is a high pinion and it has a 10.5" ring gear in it also. Here are all the specs on them.http://www.aam.com/technology/tech_prod_dl_frontaxle.html
Look at the last one and it has a 13.5" ring gear on it. I wonder what that is going into?

They also make every type of locker imagineable. This could be really cool in a few years.

i dont think any modern front axle will be running on the coast side like they used to
as it is weaker
you can 'rev rot' them and get the same strength with less wieght = less cost

I wonder what size u-joints they use. That's what's really needed.

This is the company that makes GM's corporate axles. Look at this one... http://www.aam.com/technology/tech_prod_dl_rearaxle1150.html

Looks like a 14 bolt, eh?

So what axles are the Jeeps going to have? I've been wondering since I Diamler/Chrysler dropped Dana as their axle supplier. I bet they will use the 8.25 in the rear of all of them. Who knows what they'll do for the front?? Probably IFS...:rainbow:

So are they building all the 3/4 and 1 ton ft & rear diffs?

Why are the Dodge D60s crappy?

I believe they have balljoints and vacuum actuated diffs.

I know the D44 vacumn diffs are basically useless. What about the D60? And why are they hard to convert? Or just too expensive to fawk with?

As far as ball joints, pretty simple to put a kingpin knuckle on there or am I dreaming? Reason I ask is I'm thinking about getting a Cummins TD, partly cause of the D60 and D80.

Yeah 20 questions, check the user name.

It would be shorter to list the reasons they aren't crappy, but:

Ball Joints
CAD
30 Spline
Smaller shafts than older 60s (1.3x?)
Unit bearings
No Hubs
Semi-Floating

Plus in the original Dodge applications you have that delightful track-bar and death-wobble prone steering design.

It is still one of the best axles that you can get in a new truck, but it is pretty crappy compared to the real 60's.

I have a 2001 cummins with the "mini60" up front, and I also have a kingpin 60 out of an 80 chev 1 ton sitting in the yard waiting to go in the scout.

There is a definite visible difference. But I wan't be doing any crawlin in the dodge,...... thats what I have the IH for.

The only full floatin 60 is in the Ford duallies, and it has ball joints.
