Mine is getting progressively worse with the leaking. Is that somehting that is easily rebuilt at home? It seems to be leaking where the 2 pieces bolt together. To have it rebuilt by my mechanic is $475 and a rebuilt from Spectre is $650. As usual, OUCH on the FJ60 but it beats a car payment and pretty soon the whole thing will be new.

Replacing the seals definietly sounds like it is worth a try. There are two rubber O rings (I think) and two teflon seals. Other than the seals, there isn't much to them that is rebuildable. The hardest part is getting the Pitman arm off. Don't fool around with a cheap puller; get the biggest one you can find.

I checked in the Toyta manual and rebuilding the box looks like a relatively easy job. There are (apparently) 3 O rings, 2 teflon seals and an oil seal. The only other replaceable items are the caged needle bearings and the ball rearing on the input shaft. You also have to set the preload on the power piston and th sector shaft with the adjuster nuts. It is about a 2 bannana job after you get the Pitman arm off. For sure, Toyota sells the parts, but you "better shop around".
