Anyone have any good tips for getting the broken axle shaft stub out of a D44 detroit carrier after the axle snaps?
I've bent a few, and twisted splines, but never snapped one yet, just wondering what I'll have to do when it does happen, aside from removing the carrier, or floping it on its side! :D
Thanks,

Well, I thought the pirate way was to flip it on it's side and shake it out. :flipoff2:
But for normal people I have heard a few ways:
1) pull the other side out as well... and push the splined broken end out with a small rod. (there is a 1/4"?? size hole between each side of the carrier to do this)
2) Strong magnet on pole to go in there and pull the piece out. (I can't believe that this would work well)
3) Pull the carrier, I can't buy that this one works well if anything is sticking out past the carrier bearing. it's a tight fit going in with no room to wiggle it back out if something is sticking partially in to the axle tube.
Having just gotten detriots I asked this question myself once, so haven't had the pleasure of doing it. But those are the 3 ideas people gave me.

One time I snapped an axle off at the carrier (dana 25), The magnet dose NOT work, plus you still have chunks of axle floating around in the housing. Pull the detroit out and use a punch to get the broken axle chunk out of the detroit. Now clean the housing out real well to get all the loose stuff out and your done. Also the little chunk of axle that you get out of the carrier makes a good hood ornament:D

the most impressive technique Ive ever heard of was described by H8mondays.
a long rod, and a welding rod, clamp the electrode to it, stick it thru the axle tube ,turn on the machine and let the rod stick to the broken axle piece, then shut off the welder and remove the whole shebang.
i have used the magnet method and it did work. it takes a while but it works. it wont work when the splines are twisted though as it is obviously jammed.and usually at least in my experiances the broken pieces if it didnt snap clean are all in the tube not in the diff, and the magnet helps to get them out to
Carry a piece of gas line. a straight piece.. Then push it from the other side. simple..
And you can thank BADASSJEEPGUY.. cause it works.. :D

Thanks for all the great tips!
I will be assembling a kit to use several of these methods when it inevitably happens.

The last time I snapped one on the trail and had to fix it, I took both sides apart and stacked extensions. It takes about 5 or 6 3/8 extensions, a 3/8 to 1/4 in adapter and a 6in 1/4 extension...oh yeh, and a hammer or rock.

yeah what twaldher said..1) pull the other side out as well... and push the splined broken end out with a small rod. (there is a 1/4"?? size hole between each side of the carrier to do this)
I have tried this and it worked witth the D44....ON the d30 I had to drop the carrier and remove it with a screwdriver

Here's the best way:
Unbolt driveshaft and suspension linkages (including leaf springs if so equipped), support rear frame, pinch rear brake line, unbolt it from axle, remove entire axle housing, turn it on its side (broken side down) and SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE it'll come right out if you shake hard enough.
Bolt everything back up, bleed the brakes, you're set.
