Have a friend who removed his catalytic converter in his Trooper ('91 - V6). It backfires very little and the growl is not too loud at all. What would be the negative consequences of removing catalytic converter? (other than fines/tickets/emissions testing......etcetera) Loss of torque? 02 sensor wreck havoc? Engine mechanical problems?

I replaced my catalytic converter for a resonator (bolts on so I can swap for emissions control) and have had no issues. The thing is that on my trooper the sensor is in front of the converter so no problem.
btw its a 94 rs
as long as theres no O2 sensore behind the cat there shouldnt be a problem.

none...it will be noisy-er, but you could "punch" it out clean and run it .....avoiding all the "inspection" issues.
you'll see a minimal increase in volume and a little better flow on acceleration. i run the cat on my F-250 like this .......really because i wasn't willing to spend $$ on a new one when mine clogged up.
just don't want to see it go off the page........

So what happens on an OBD2 application where you have 02 sensors before and after the verts? Just a check engine light or performance issues? Anyone know how to turn off those damn check engine lights (98 Trooper)? Some of us don't live in emission check areas.

you have to have an OBD2 scanner to clear the CE codes, and yes on an OBD2 vehicle with O2s after the cat you will get a CE light and a code that its not gettin the readings it wants. There's really no noticeable performance increase so IMHO its not worth the trouble to remove em.

Keep the cat, unless she is plugged up. If so replace it.
On my 89RS Trooper, it's running a cat no muffler. Sounds great, not too noisy :D

ditching the cat. for more power is old-school bullshit and chicks will not dig you.
