ok, here is my problem, i have these 2 output shafts, i need to put this one on a lathe and turn the inside of it down, presion is not critical, i need at least a 1 inch hole to clear an input shaft, i just need something 1 1/3 inchs or close, the old one ran bearing, but this one i will be running with out (hell jeeps only used 2 bearing, why does the bronco need 3?, also there were gay needle bearings that really did not do much, anyway i have decided to go with out that beaing) the machine shops around here (3) had nothign to cut th hardened steel, any help me? i will ship them to you help please!

The best way is to grind not cut when it is hardened. Two places D & E Cutter Grinding in San Carlos, small shop and a friend is part owner. Second is Babbit Bearing in San Jose, we bring shafts for motors up to 1200 hp there to have bearing journels built up and brought back to spec.

What output shaft is that. Is it a jeep one that you are boring out? Does that mean you are able to get a 26 spline output? The machine shops you are talking to are to into doing quality work. There is no problem removing material with carbide tooling in steel no mater how hard it is, it is just hard to get a decent surface finish if the material is not thru hardened. I will do it for free if you aren't in a hurry and you tell me that it is the 26 spline jeep shaft that can be bought new for $80.

Hey are you sure that bearing you are removing is not needed to support the input shaft? I think it is there to support the input shaft not teh output shaft. Some dana 300's used a bushing for that instead of the needle bearings, but I think you need something or you might get some deflections and break the gears.

its the 26 allright out of a scout (same as jeep) i have 2 now (one to destroy to make it work)
The input shaft looks like it uses 1-2 bearing already, when the output shaft was out i grabbed the imput shaft and could not move it around at all so the bearing that it has in there will problaly be fine on its own with out the needle bearings,
The out put shaft has 2 big ass bering as well so it does not need to get any more support
i took apart a jeep case and and found a small bearing but nothing big, i think it should be fine with out, but if you have something to hog it out gordon that woul rock, i will run it and see if it snaps o seise's then we might just find as better out put for the broncos i am going to pick and pull tonight to get a Scout D20 case and i will pull it apart and see if i find anything worth wild in there

I just looked at a Bronco dana 20 there is that one bearing on the input shaft that I was talking about and that is the only bearing on the input shaft, however the input shaft has a female spline that fits tight over the transmission output shaft. that is why that gear feels solid, the input shaft is supported by 1 bearing and the transmission output shaft. Does the jeep input shaft have 2 bearings on there?
