I have read and heard good things about the TRD axle in Toyota trucks.
Now then....

What is involved in throwing a Toyota TRD axle with the locker into the rear of my CJ?

SUA/SOA?
Driveshaft?
Bolt Pattern?
E-brake cables?
Brake Lines?
Width?
Ratio's available?
Carrier Breaks?

Thanks

toy axle is same-ish as a YJ

way I see it, you will need to move the perches, as toy's are stock SOA on neg. arch springs. big deal, grind off the old ones. you can buy bolt-on perches from Conn-Ferr for $60 (last I looked) get it all on and stright, drive to a welder and have him weld it up proper right in the truck.

rear brakes are drum. so the e-brake cables will be long, but you can either live with that, or get six states to make you custom ones. you may need to make a custom bracket where the cables meet the foot pedal cable under the jeep, big deal, that's easy.

brake line should be a simple bolt up, but if it's not, big deal, you can have (maybe goodridge?) make you a braided stainess custom one for $50-ish.

all that really leaves is the driveshaft, I don't know if a conversion u-joint is made for that application, but A-A (talk to Vic) or Jess would know for sure. I know Jess makes t-case flanges for anything , and they run around $100.

almost forgot, bolt pattern will be 6-on-5.5" bolt circle, but that's a cake job to change over the pattern on the front axle on the a Jeep.

anybody see any holes in the above that I might have missed?

SUA/SOA: SOA

Driveshaft: there are conversion U-joints that will fit the toy yoke
not sure if they will work with your driveshaft though
Bolt Pattern: 6x5.5, I would swap your front parts to match or
have the axles/drums redrilled in the rear

E-brake cables?

Brake Lines: you can get adapters

Width: 58" I believe

Ratio's available: 4.10 and 4.30 were the common factory I
believe

Carrier Breaks: no carrier breaks

2wd Toy axles are 5 on 4.5 ;) Same bolt pattern as YJ

but they have a smaller housing...7.5" IIRC.

Cant you put 2wd shafts in a 4wd housing? That would solve it :D

supposedly 2wd 6cylinder non TRD are 5on4.5 with the 8" diff, I think that is only 86-95 though. I think the 7.5 actually has the same housing, so don't be fooled. I would think the 7.5 would have smaller/less spline count shafts...

I just finished putting an '88 Toy 8" in my Jeep and you are on the right track with everything

-Brakelines are metric, get a braided line made with SAE to metric

-E-brake cable is different design, shouldn't be too hard to adapt

-6on5.5 pattern on 4wd and 2wd TRD

-I talked to Jess and apparently the conersion joint is no longer made, I got a 1310 flange from him for $60 and he said there is also a cheaper on but he doesn't reccomend it.

-factory gears are 4.10,4.30,4.37,4.56, and 4.88. no carrier breaks. for the 8" there are "4cylinder" and "6cylinder" thirds that are slightly different and for the most part their components are not interchangable, but they are interchangable as a whole. The 6cyl diff is stronger, but the 4 is still pretty respectable.

Width is 55" on the pre 86 trucks, 58.5 on the 86-95 trucks, 60 inch on the 95.5 and on trucks. (Same with 4runners). all the 95 and older are the 8" diff. 95.5 and newer tacomas are the 8.4" diff (also called 210mm, and 8.25") unless they are TRD with the electric locker in which case it is a 60 inch wide 8". 4runners never got the 8.4, all are the 8" diff, 95.5 and newer are 60 inches wide and e-lockers are available in there somewhere.

whew! I think that's just about everything...

oh, and you'll need metric lug nuts :flipoff2:
