specs.... 97 TJ 4.0L auto 8" long arm, 36's, re wacky tappy sye, np231.

Ok ive been getting a bad clunking and clinking from my driveshaft for a lil while. It started several months ago when i lost my tranny mount and tore the cv apart.

after i rebuilt it it started making the noises. I kicked the pinion up a lil higher which corrected it. that was a week before the axle swap. Well now that ive finished the swap its still doing it. the angles are ok and i rebuilt the shaft AGAIN, new centering ball and ujoints and it still wont shut the f' up!!! When im under the jeep if you push up on the cv it seems that the output shaft moves a lil bit. COULD the bearings in the TCASE be shot? i run a wack and tap RE sye at the moment (been runnin for about a year or so) so i have never pulled the ass end of the tcase apart.

Im going to be putting a flipped 300 in in a couple months i just need to make the damn thing to survive until then.

any suggestions... are there bearings in the tailhousing that could be gone?

I plan on running a flipped 300 with a 4:1 and going with a high angle driveline driveshaft. but i NEED the jeep to hold for another couple months.

thanks for the help

There is no bearings in the tail housing itself. There is two bearings in the case, one fwd and one rear.
Did you try removing the rear drive shaft and driving it around with the front driveshaft only? This will tell you if it's the T-case or D-shaft.

TJ 231s are different than YJs, and I think there IS a bearing in the TJ tail cone. (TJs have an external slip while YJs have the slip internal to the tailhousing).

I'd have to find my old one and check but I'm pretty sure it's there, and should be replaceable.

Take a chance give Tom Wood a call. I talked to him yesturday and he was telling me the difference between the shafts of the two cases. And how they differed while i was deciding between which heavy duty sye to order. I'm sure he probrably what is causing your problems. I figure its worth a shot he seems very willing to answer questions about the sye and cv drive shafts.
