: Toyota engine swap?
bonez72 08-17-2003, 09:46 PM I'm going to have to replace my cam shaft and rocker arms on my '87 4runner 'cause they're worn and making a lot of chatter. Any input as to whether or not I should just swap engines while I'm at it (I have a 22-re with a little over 100k miiles) or just replace the cam and rockers?
Haole 08-18-2003, 12:44 AM There's a place in San Dog that will sell a complete rebuild for $988. (or at least the last ad I saw them do.) The place is called WAM (Wholesale Auto Machine.)
You could do just the top end, but that notoriously can cause the bottom end to go. The same place will do the complete top end for $300.
I did the top end with ~60K on the block and head and had no problems.
bonez72 08-18-2003, 04:45 AM Cool, I'll check it out. Thanks.

Do not buy a rebuild. Repeat,,,, Do not buy a rebuild. Just go to www.engnbldr.com and purchase the parts you need for the head rebuild and timing. I suggest a full new timing set, cam, and lifter block. You will not need to redo the bottom end.
I got stung by a rebuild business. The engine was a piece of sh*t!!!

WTF did you do to it to kill a 22RE that soon? I bet you could get away with replacing the busted parts and calling it good...

Thanks for the link. I'll check out this option also.
VT_Toy 08-20-2003, 08:16 AM You can get a head setup for performance for about $600 - nice cam, bigger valves, ported and polished, etc.
Just over 100k on the bottom end? It's just barely broken in! :D
85runnerAZ 08-20-2003, 12:43 PM I can vouch for engnbldr. Do a RV cam, timing chain, and guides with metal backing. Got it on mine and love it.

WAM would not back their warrenty to me. They put a stock dia. piston in an oversize bore. I also had a bad experience with Japanese Engine Exchange.

Halogrinder 08-20-2003, 07:52 PM hell, 100,000 miles! you got another 200,000 to get her nice and broke in.... they do make a little noise when running...if its EFI, could you possibly be hearing the injectors? those things are noisy bastards to.... why dont you try to adjust the valves first, then see if you need to do any replacing? 100,000 miles seems low on a 22R unless you thrashed it. talk to LC engineering....www.lcengineering.com they have BITCHIN stuff fer 22R's. thats where i get all my goodies. top notch stuff ~halo

Holy crap! you can buy turnkey 350 from the chevy dealer for that much! It may not go the 300,000 the 22r is good for but...
Charlo
luvmeye22RE 08-21-2003, 01:09 AM I got my last 22re from a junkyard with 76000 miles on it in perfect shape for 650 dollars. I was pretty satisfied with the purchase.
foxtrapper 08-21-2003, 03:45 AM Have you at least checked the lash on those rockers? This chatter you mention may very well be just a loose clearance. Honestly, I've *never* heard of a stock R series engine killing it's rockers, let alone at 100k miles.

It's definately buyer beware, but this is a reputiable place. They do just about all engine work for the dealers in San Diego.
