MTR's are far superior tires to the current BFG MT's.

I have been running the MTR's for a few months now they seem to work good. I have had BFG's in the past and had good luck with them also. But I sthill think The MTR's are what I would chose of the 2.

I have both BFG MT km's and Goodyear MTR's in 35x12.5.....I prefer the MTR's.

I'd take the BFG's. The only down fall to the BFG is the side wall strength, but the MTR has the same issue.

Someday the current MTR fad will be over. Just because they give them to competitors don't mean they are they best. I've seen real world examples on a constant basis, two nearly identical rigs and the BFG's walk it every time. Wet or dry! :D

MTR's

Costco the other day was able to look up Krawlers for $365 each (39.5") Hmmm. :p

However no idea if they can really get them.

i think they've improved the sidewall to a 3 ply  , maybe? I also like the little lip around the bead to protect the rim. it wouldn't do a thing to a serious bang, but might help with the rock rash. i vote BFG. BTW, my local discount tire matched the on-line price from tirerack. saved me the hassle of dragging the tires down there and having someone mount-n-balance 'em

I've been running the BFG's for 5 years on two different 40's and really like 'em. No one has yet to make a compelling argument for me to change.

I have the 35" BFG MT KM with the rim guard and it is a joke. The sidewalls seem about the same as the last generation. I'm starting to get cracks in mine. The real advantage for me is that Costco roadhazards them for $9 and they sell them for a decent price. Goodyears are at a premium around here and most of the places here charge extra to mount mail order tires and no road hazard. I'm not interested in the Krawlers. Just this week I put 1780 miles on my Cruiser. I would have no doubt that Costco could get them. In the past our local Costco has ordered the Baja TAs for customeres.

Unless you are hard wheelin' it, I would go with a Generic cheap version we sell one that performs very well as do most tire stores and I had one set that got 60k on an 80 series Cruiser. I also have a set of the 35's on bling wheels for street use.
The MTR really scallops on some trucks if you don't rotate them faithfully, the BFG does not seem to do this as bad.

Not even a question in my mind. I ran BFG's for years and now run the MT/Rs. Don't notice much difference on the road but the MT/Rs are MUCH better on the trail.

I consider them the perfect "All-Terrain" tire. Swampers are a better trail tire in most cases but I just don't want to run swampers on the road. If you are seeing the road and still want a relatively aggressive tread for the trail the MT/R's gets the nod from me.

I'd say BFG. I've have never run a MT/R though, so I'm biased. Alot of people say that the BFG sidewalls suck but then so do the tires on ricers.
This pic was at last years 4th of July run. My brother had BFGs and hit the same tree stump as this guy did but it only gouged the side wall a tad. As you can see the MT/R was destroyed:D

Love my MTR's... never had a worry with them...

Had BFG's in the past, they were decent tires, but I prefer the MTR's. One of my good freinds has a set of the new Mud Terrain KM's on his BJ70, he has had nothing but trouble with them "cracking" when aired down, he just bought a set of MTR's to replace them.

Some of the "performance" will differ depending on the terrain you're on. One thing I do know is that my MT/Rs get MUCH better traction on the slickrock in Moab than my BFG's did.

Also a fan of the MTR.... Best offroad tire for a street driven rig - and my wheeling conditions are the polar opposite of Adam's.....

I disagree, I have had both and the MTR's are a better all around tire.

There is no arguing that MT's are good tires, I just don't think they are nearly as good on the trail, rocks etc as the MTR's.

I also feel the MTR sidewalls are stout. I run with them a lot and they hold up to the same abuse as the Swampers on the other rigs.

Sure, they cut, but I have seen WAY more BFGs bite the dust.

I've never run either but I have seen a rock slice right through the side of a sidewall on a 35 x 12.5 x 15 MTR. But if it were me I'd still take them over the BFGs. Though I think there were significant upgrades to the BFGs when the K models came out. Before then they were junk, as skinny as some of the cheapo car tires I've seen on the market. Piss poor...

if BFG gets off their asses and makes a better sidewall like the crawler in a 37-12.5-15 size i would still have BFG mt's... but alas the MTR is a much better tire currently.

MTR all the way. My brother ran BFGs on his cherokee and after he felt how good the MTRs felt on the FJ he had to have some. You cant compare the 2. BFG is a good tire but MTR takes it to a whole new level.

I ran bfg's on my 62 for about two years and 70,000 miles of hard use and I know nothing about how the Mtr's run and I say run the GOODYEARS that is one awesome looking tire. One of our club members runs them on his 80 in the 34" variety and they look awesome.

I say MT/Rs... Specially if you are not wheeling all the time. I have a buddy with over 70K on them, and that's on a lifted F350. Plus the kid is only 25 and drives it like he stole it... :D He had MTs on it before and only got 30k before the were shot.

This thread sounds like a Ford vs Chevy truck debate in a Wyoming bar! Everybody has a strong opinion w/o real objective evidence to back them up. I recall one of the 4x4 mags doing a comparison of several tires in different conditions and both tires came out pretty much the same all around. It was early last year I think, right after the new MT's came out. I'd like to base my decision on some concrete data!

On rock trails such as Rubicon, Slick rock etc.

HANDS DOWN

it is the MTR's. I have been running mine for 2 years. This season they have been all the way through the Rubicon 2 times, to Buck and back 3 times and to Spider another 3-4 or 5 times. I still have Rubithon to do and some other runs. They DO NOT have ANY cuts like the BFG's did and I am wheeling harder than I used to.

edit: I ran bfg's for several years

OK, no data, but I have one set of BFG MT km in 35's and one set of Goodyear MTR's in 35" I have had over 10 sets of BFG' MT's over the years, the new km's suck on the street, they are just drive like crap compared to the old style. MTR;s drive wonderfull, might wear faster I dunno. Got no rocks around here, but mud and alot of rain(well not anymore it seems) but the MTRs win in both mud and rain IMOP.

I would get another set of MTR's in a heartbeat. and I wish Goodyear made the MTR in a size like 33x10.5....I would buy a few sets.

I hope you don't believe all the crap you read in 4x4 mags:rolleyes:

I have 37X15 MTR's and 35 X15 BFG's, I like the MTR better but mostly because of the height. I would not lose sleep running either. I have had the MTR's for a year and I trailer 99% of the time. The tires are losing chunks of tread which kinda sucks, but is understandable considering the abuse I put them through. The sidewalls have a few cuts.

The BFG's have a lot of little sidewall cuts, but the tread has not lost chunks as much as the MTR. I am sure if you run them in enough different types of terrain the performance results will be a wash. I used the BFG's when it was a daily driver and was happy.

one thing you may consider is the new interco IROK 36 X13.5 X15. It is a little larger than the 35's which is good. One of the 4xx4 rags state that the IROK comes in bias or radial design. If they are available and for how much is the question Several people from the board have run them and like them just another option

I have been running the same set of BFG MTs for about 7 years. They have worked really well on the tonka. However after hearing a few stories from some friends about ATs seperating their treads I had an AT myself do this. Scared the crap out of me. I also watched an AT do this on a tow rig while heading to TDS one year. Luckily I had my windows up as a chunk of the tire would have otherwise hit me in the face.

I may be looking at something else when I need new tires.

Uh... once they hit 10 years, pull and toss ANY tire! :(

On the BFG's.... maybe it is just me, but it they get wet and I start coming out on rock... slip city! Notice someone else with MTR's with no issues (both rigs had open front, locked rears).

As Nolen says "I don't wheel enough, so the BFG's will be on there for another 10 years!" :D

Hey... looking good to get the house refinanced, saving another $300 a month on the mortgage. I need a SHOP!!! Getting there, but damn this last year has been a bitch! Maybe I'll even have two nickles left over to rub together! :)

I have MT's on my Cruiser and at CM03 I noticed rushing air when I crested a hill, didn't even know I hit anything but had a hole in the sidewall large enough to insert 3 fingers. May look seriously at the MTR when it's time to change.

Have run both and still can not beat the BFG MT's in the deep snow, otherwise they blow.

ps real snow tires are 2 ply

the BFG mud terrain has a thinner sidewall than a MTR and I have done a side by side comparison on the sidewall strength and the BFG mud terrain loses out to the MTR!

The krawlers ive never seen out here in the outback, but imagine they would be greatly improved! Hope to have some one day soon.
