Sounds like the 1600 swappo is the way to go. Whatabout emissions testing, specifically in the Golden State. I've heard the smog man may not even notice an 8V swap, what about the 16V? This is supposed to remain a daily driver and I don't want to have a big hassle every 2 years. Any experiences that can be shared?

Well i havent had to smog mine yet, but i have heard that they are alot cleaner burning than the 1.3, and if you hook up all the vacuum lines...not a big deal!
I have a 16v in mine, and you will have to take it down to the state and have a ref. cert. it.

Thanks for the reply, mas2.
If you have the time, could you expound on the refereeing process?

Hi -
We have done alot of large number of 1600 16 Valve conversions for California residents....all of which have passed California smog criteria and referee inspections. The one item that they are a stickler about is that the sensor light must be changed to read "check engine" light.

My 8v 1.6 passed at a test only station...16v are wildly different visually...No way to sneak those unless your guy is :rasta: ...Mike
