: White Smoke

Hiya Cruisers-

Heres my dilema.

Recently my motor conked out on me, it would turn over but it wouldn't start, so I checked if any fuel was reaching the carburator and nothing was coming outta the fuel line . . . so I changed the fuel pumped . . . voila, my motor started up again. But as soon as I turned the motor off, I would try to start her again and she wouldn't start, instead lots of white smoke would come outta the exhaust. But if I let her rest awhile, she would start up again with no white smoke, just nice and clear exhaust.

Please don't tell me I have a cracked engine block. My wife is gonna put a crack in my skull if thats the case, considering how much $$$ I already put into her (I had purchased from a person that said she was in great shape. But when I had checked out by a mechanic, he had list of things that needed to be taken care of), he did mention that the motor looks to be in great shape and he did test drive it a couple of times and didn't mention anything about any engine trouble (this was about a month ago).

I love my rig, but I think it loves to drain my back account more so.

By the way, its a 69 with a 383 chevy engine.

Heres a num skull question, what kind of gas would you guys recommend 87, 89 or 92 octane?

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Happy Cruisin everyone <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

I would'nt just say that you have a cracked block or head, but let me put it this way, your 383 is burning water with it's gas! Maybe just a blown head gasket, but I'm sure you'll find water in your oil.

I run 87 octane in all my cars. 91 in my dirtbikes.

pull your sprak plugs and watch for whatever comes out of them and see what the plugs look like. that will tell you what and where the problem is. (i have never blown a head gasket on a chevy just cracked a block)

old chevys love cheap gas

good luck

you're burning water. that smoke is actually steam. run everything you have on 87 unless it specifically states to burn high octane. you can actually get worse fuel economy burning high octane un-needingly.
