: who makes '76-79 fj40 high steer arms?
fj40m4 12-04-2001, 02:14 PM I'm looking for high steer arms for my 1976 fj40, all the arms I have found out there are for post '79 fj40s and mini trucks.
I want to stay with my current '76 knuckles, so please give me some input on a good set of high steer arms for the '76. :usa:
LC Hamma 12-04-2001, 02:52 PM Have you checked www.aqualu.com ? I had an extra drum axle
taking up space. So, I cut the arm off the driver side (where it
meets the mounting surface), flipped it over on top of my
existing passenger knuckle, & had a professional welder add
a gusset & weld it up. Replace your knuckle arm studs w/grade
8 or better hardware. Don't ask why, just do it! :D I'm sure
plenty of folks have gone this route also.
Jason M 12-04-2001, 03:13 PM I am not sure that anyone makes true Hy-steer arms for the older FJ's You might want to give the boys at OTT industries a call they would probably know or be able to help you.
OTT's site (http://www.ottindustries.com)
Aqualu makes the Y style steering arm. Not quite as nice in my opinion just because you still have the tie rod protecting the diff.

You could always switch to minitruck knuckles then all of your problems would be taken care of.... And you could probably sell your current disk knuckles to someone that wanted to do a disk conversion on their older LC....
Just food for thought.
morgan 12-04-2001, 03:28 PM FWIW, I switched to minitruck knuckles on my '76 front axle so I could put high-steer (Extreme Gear Off-Road - the ones that Mudrak sells) on my FJ55.
Not the answer you were looking for, but it was pretty darn straightforward.

I am switching over to the mini knuckles on 2 of my Cruisers that have the 76-78 discs.
I broke the arm (Aquala I think) off three times. The first two times I screwed the knuckle up beyond recognition. Wallowed out the holes.
So I now have 2 axles with no r/s knuckle, hence the switch to mini knuckles. The r/s Cruiser knuckles are pretty hard to find.
The last one it also broke off part of the top of the knuckle.
The mini-knuckles have a larger bolt pattern and larger studs, so are hence stronger. They also have as you know a greater choice of arms. (I also think the double non high steer arm puts more stress on the knuckle.)
Also, making my own r/s arm out of 2 r/s mini arms. They have the larger tapered hole for the bigger tre's. You can also use the 23mm fj80 tre's with them.
Just a thought for you to mull over, I wish I would have switched over to mini knuckles a lot sooner. They are cheaper, MUCH easier to find and I think stronger.
The Jerk 12-04-2001, 10:36 PM call grady at extreme off road in rancho cordova (916)638-5843, i got my arms for my 76 axel from him. they were sweet! jiMMy
LC Hamma 12-05-2001, 09:45 AM Here's a writeup using the minitruck knuckles:

As noted above, they do use the larger knuckle studs, which
would be a better chioce IMO. You will need to decide if you want
to use the minitruck tie rod or have your arms rewelded &
reamed for your LC tie rod. :D

fj40m4 12-05-2001, 01:20 PM all the info given is great, the only thing is I just bought the 76 axles for the disk brakes and lockers and I would hate to have the knuckles out go to waist. It seems the 76-79 just are not being used for a clean high steer set up.
Thinking about machining some myself, anyone out there interested in buying a pair? :usa:

If they work, yes.

Before you do, check with the Olsen twins. I think they did do high-steer arm for the '70s cruiser bolt pattern.
