hey there,
bit of a newbie question, but i have never done a spool and just want to ask what is required exactly.
some beer and a welder obviously.....but what exactly needs to get welded up?
they are my pos 3.07 gears that come stock on all TJ's down under, only good thing is we get D44 standard. So i don't care at all if the gears are trashed.
When I replace them with 4.56/4.88 and arbs or whatever in the future am i going to run into any other issues because i have spooled it?
thanks for the help.

Techinally your not spooling here you riggin, also known as lincoln locking. but none the less it'll be good :D First off Just take the diff cover off, drain all the oil out and either remove the carrier or leave it in. Then clean off the spider gears as best as possible and begin the welding :D You want to weld the spider gears together. Besure not to weld to crazy you might accidentally weld the spider gears to the axle shafts.. hehehe.. Then clean up your mess, slap the cover back on and oil it up. as far as it affecting an ARB swap later.. nope :smokin:

not spool...lincoln.
ah whatever, welded and locked tight as can be. hehe. :D
I assumed it was just the spider gears that needed to be welded.
Can you do it with a number of spot welds or should I just go to town on it?
When I change gears and lockers everything will be coming out anyways as the carrier needs to be replaced to go up to 4.56 or 4.88 gears.
So there is no chance that I will ruin the axles at all?
Unless the snap under the pressure of climbing big ass rocks and turning my tyres. hehe

I would run about 5lbs in that bad boy. I filled the gap from the spiders and side gears to the carrier . I would at least run a couple beads down between the spiders and side gears. Be careful little pellets of steel arent good for bearings. Neither is slag chips so I would recommend removing the carrier and do it on the bench. Much more thorough way to do it and inspect your job when done. Clean it all very very well when done and reinstall with the new lincoln locker that works great.

If you plan to replace the carrier I would weld the gears to the carrier. It is easyer to get a ground on the carrier w/o going through some bearings (bad). It is also the widest part of the gear giving the weld more leverage over the turning of the gears. Farther from the axle too. Heat will dissapate better. Lots of carb&choke cleaner works good for cleaning out all the grooves.
