IIRC, I've got a page on ih8mud.com that covers axle widths for a variety of vehicles, including FJ40's. In case you need another reference...

So were/are the majority of CJ's upto 1973.
The FJ40 rear is a nice upgrade, they use the Model 18 transfer which is offset too.

So the rear of a FJ40 is 55" WMS to WMS. I just measured the front on mine and it is around 57". Is it common for the front and rear axles on vehicles to be different like this? Just curious.

Yep, the front is 57", and the rear I thought was more like 56", but I dont have a complete axle to measure, so I'll accept 55" for now! Most 4wds have wider front axles. If you drive behind one, you'll notice it.
