Well I have been working on rebuiling this 14 bolt that I got and I am stripping off the drum brakes and putting on discs. The axle is a cab and chassis dually. Now I took the drums off and I removed the 4 bolts that hold the brakes onto the axle tubes. But the spindles are welded to the brakes it appears??? This shouldnt be should it? I thought I just needed to knock the brakes off over the spindles and I could get started with putting on the disc parts. Can someone give me soem details about this please. I've searched and searched and no luck on this. Thanks
Matt

Did you remove the Nut that hold the Hub on the spindle??
this has to be removed so the drums can be removed from the Spindle and then the backing plates can be removed!!
untill then they will not Move from the axle!!!

I have the drums off but I can't get the backing plates off cause it seems as if it is welded to the spindles.

The verry center ring that the backing plate bolts to is welded to the housing, but the backing plate bolts on to that with 4 bolts.
Do you have those 4 bolts?
Did you remove them already?

yeah the four bolts are removed but it isn't coming off of the spindle at all no matter how hard I beat on it. Do you happen to know what the spindle is held on by or attached to at all and how.

Its hammertime. If you have the 4nuts off, the hub off the spindle, the drums off the backing plate then I would try cleaning the spindle at the base of the backing plate very well and try tapping on the outer edge. They are a separate part. So separate them. Dont hit the spindle its irreplaceable.

I too have a cab and chasis dualy axle, and if you look a couple inches down the tube to the outside, you will see what looks like a ground down weld, that is where the spindle is bonded to the tube, it is not actually a weld.
the ring that the backing plate is bolted to is welded strait to the housing, it shoud be near the spindle but is not part of it.
I don't know how familiar you are with 14b's, but they are a bit different than a dana axle in that area, because on a dana axle where the backing plate bolts to IS part of the spindle.

if you are replacing the drums with discs anyway then get a bigger hammer! you won't need the backing plate anymore.:D
