: Whos's happy with their 4.0 HO?

After looking at some specs, a TBI 350 only has about 50 more HP than a 4.0 HO. I am tossing up the idea for a swap in to my CJ since it will be a whole hell of a lot cheaper and easier.

I figure I could keep my D44's with 35's and not have a "too much horsepower" problem and breaking everything.

Any opinions would be great

I love it. It doesn't have big block like horse power but that is ok with me since I am running 35" SSRs on stock axles. With 4.56 gears the thing hauls @$$ too. I have the turbo city intake and a high flow cat and muffler which also add some horsepower. The things last forever too. My father's ZJ has about 175,000 miles and he hasn't had a single problem with the engine. My advice would be go with the 4.0L HO and use the leftover money and buy and intake and maybe headers and an exhaust system (or straight pipes).

Cripes, you still haven't done the engine swap? :flipoff2: I can't say much, mine still doesn't run LOL. I still vote for the v-8 btw...

My 4.0L HO is great. no complaints about it... you can lug it down to less than 200 rpms (don't know needle doesn't go down that far) and it keeps running smooth. Has plenty of power, with 3.07 gears and 33" tires I was able to break them loose on pavement.
Now that I have 4.56 gears I'll be dangerous. :D

Has solid power from 1,000rpms all the way to red-line. Personally I will always have that 6 under my hood. Only thing I might do, and just for the fun of it, is build a 4.7L stroker out of it. (300HP, 350ft/lb I believe)

No. I haven't had the money, but I'm about to break out my credit card to get one. It was real cold last night and I let my jeep warm up for about 15 min. this morning and it would still die everytime I let off the gas. I had people honking at me at a stop light when I was trying to restart the motor. It's friggin' time for EFI!

The biggest thing that got me going on the 4.0 is the little difference in HP. I don't need a bunch, but 196 from a 4.0 HO sounds pretty damn good.

I've got a 4.2L with a 4.0L head and a Mopar MPI fuel injection kit with a Borla header and catback... I also added a K&N filter charger and Stage 2 performance chip.. Runs great! :D

My 2.5L cranks 35's, and since its fuel injected it can go anywhere. I'm geared so low that horsepower really is not an issue (although it would be nice). BTW its really funny to watch the carb'd 350 guys stall on obsticles that the four-popper creeps right up!

I don't have the HO, but I've got the original Renix 4.0. Still a damn fine motor if you ask me. Light weight, fuel injected, plenty of power, and it can really move. With 4.10s, I can light the tires up going down the freeway :flipoff2:

I've got a '91 XJ with the 4.0 HO with an auto behind it. It's been a great engine with 140k + miles on it right now. Still has even cyl pres. across all 6 cyls., and consumes zero oil. As a side note, mine has a factory 90 amp alt.

Sure a 350tbi only has a few more ponies but it's an entirely different powerband. There is no mistaking those 2 additional cylinders.

On the other hand, I have a 350TBI in my CJ7 but I dont feel it is the best bang for the buck. I wish I would have went with something hotter.

How about the ford 5.0 swap? If I were doing it again I would probably go this route.

You dint ask about the 4.2 cause I guess thats what you run now, I have done many mods to my 258 4.2 includeing a complete rebuild and it puts out a really great amount of power for rockcrawling considering low gears. If you dont have the money or time for a 350 or other v-8 than the 4.2 or 4.0 is fine:usa: :D

I totally agree that a V8 doesn't compare with a 4.0. I'm mainly looking for EFI. I'm tired of the motor not running on cold mornings and stalling on hills on the rocks. The extra HP from the 4.0 is just a bonus.

I don't think a 5.0 would be much better than a TBI 350. Yeah, you could build up the 5.0, but as far as the two stock motors, a 350 has way more power and this is coming from a Ford nut.

I have the 4.0 in my 94 YJ. Automatic, 4:56 gears, 38.5" SX's and I love it. Plenty of power, great gas mileage and all factory parts. I do have a TJ air tube with a K&N and a Flowmaster exh. I plan on swapping to 4.88's or 5.13's when I do my 60/14 bolt swap. I just need a little more gear on the BIG hills on the freeway. Once I have the cash it will probably get stroked, although I have tossed around the idea of a turbo or supercharger.

I got a 4.0L in my CJ.
there's just no comparison between the 4.2L and the 4.0L
It's a whole new world. IF you're worried about power, toss a Mopar Stage II cam into the engine, some Ford Motorsport Injectors, junk the factory airbox, and I *think* you'll be happy.

Ok so here it is. I did the 4.0 into CJ swap and I wouldn't want any other motor. The thing has kick in the butt response. Mine has 173,000 miles on it and doesn't burn any oil. The guy I bought it from smogged it right before he pulled it out and it passed with flying colors. I would eventually like to stroke it too, but I am happy with what I have now. I can go up the hill leading to the rubicon in 4th gear all the way up. That is on 35's and 4.56's. I could never do that with the 4.2. On the freeway I can pull away from my buddy that has a rebuilt 4.2 with EFI. He doesn't have a chance. The 4.0 has less torque but not enough to really notice, and a tap of the throttle usually takes care of that problem. The best part about swapping in the 4.0 is that everything is factory and it bolts right in. If you end up getting one try to get the whole wiring harness. There is a power dist. block that is by the battery. It houses the fuel pump relay. you will want that. It makes the install so much easier. Plus it gives you extra relays for lights and stuff like that. Ok I am going to stop rattling on now.

Thats why I have the both of best worlds :D 4.2L low end torque and 4.0L high end horsepower. Pulls my 38.5's pretty good. It'll take my friends Mopared 4.2L with 35's and a stick shift. And i have 38.5's an auto :D
