Sure you can change the spline count but that's not where they are going to break. If you have a small bearing rear they will snap at the bearing long before the 28 spline end. If you really want a cheap upgrade get yourself a 2 wd 9"from a late 70's or so Ford. The housing will be the big bearing 28 spline. They are only 3" wider than an EB and thats generally good. Both axles are the same length so spare's are easy and cheap to find. Then when you have the money upgrading to a 31 spline Detroit or something and better axel's is easy.
