we're having some dificulty figuring out what this shaft is/was

DSI
08-23-2003, 09:24 AM
but as you can see it's definatly shorter than it was in stock forum...

DSI
08-23-2003, 09:25 AM
something else we noticed is that a stock kick driveline slipyoke slides very nicely onto the piece that was removed

DSI
08-23-2003, 09:26 AM
and what's really strange, is that the same slip end fit's the shortened, resplined, re-hardened shaft... but what the heck could it be for

It's a lawn chair, duh. :flipoff2:

It's sad that DSI has so much knowledge and yet can never figure out what stuff is. Isn't this the second time he's forgotten when he was making?

patience grasshoppa, patience... i've been building drivelines and carrier retaining can's the last few days so i haven't had time to assemble the project... well that and moto's been working on his tow rig all week!

another angle...

it's approx 6 inches shorter, and will require a 3in tube on the jack shaft...

kick tranny & t-case shortened to fit into a zuk without needing to move the stock t-case or use a 2 piece shaft...

kinda cool huh :D

Hell ya thats cool! How long is/isnt the intermediate shaft? did it take much to get the kick tranny into the tunnel?

moto had the shoe horn and KY out when i left last night... so i will get the pic's today it didn't "look" like any of the tunnel was going to have to be removed, and we're looking at moving his zuk case forward since we have to replace the mounts anyhow to try to lengthen the rear DL and shorten the front some ;)

So what is the end result for reduction? 2:1 in low...Is it the same concept as TT's rock block? Are you going to do them for anyone else?

same concept as OTT's kicker i believe it's called... the TT unit keeps the stock sami tranny and ad's the block between it and the case.

stock kick reduction is 1.8:1, i believe the rock block is also a 1.8, i think it's mentioned in rudezuk's thread about when he installed it...

as far as making more? we've got a few items we've made now that are going to get some serious abuse before we even try to sell anything.

and being as moto's such an abusive  driver, i'm sure he'd be a great tester ;) he's been running a set of bobby long's sleeved and heat treated front u-joint's for a while now, and where stock spicer's have failed, these thing's just laugh...

Good Job!

I am doing the same to fit my 4.16 t-case, so pls tell me:

Why you did not start the new splines from bearing sit ends if that splined is not usefull any longer?
How long are your new splines?
What heat treatment did you apply?
How long will be your driveshaft whit Samy Tcase on stock position?

there was no need to remove them, wh take off the hardening and extra material that doesn't need to be taken off?

spline length? about the same as the origional splined section...

they are the same length as they would be if yo were using a stock sammi tranny and t-case, i don't really understand this question... we tried to push moto's zuk case forward since he had to built new mount's anyhow, since his ripped off the frame.

Did you heat treated before machine it (because is hardened from factory) and hardened it again?

I asked here to do it, and people told me that heat treat could change dimension of the axle, and bearings could not fit as tight as before, is that true? Even said the only way is to treat it un der Controlled Atmosphere

DSI
09-08-2003, 11:34 AM
no it did not get re-treated, for several reasons...

1st, if an axle shaft is re-splined, it loses it's factory heat treating and still takes a severe amount of abuse to break, and it is considerably farther down the drivetrain, and see's 4-5x the torque load that the output will, yet they don't fail very often...

2nd, a good heat treater locally  that's funny... the nearest one would be a serious drive or at least a week turn around via UPS

Send the shaft to me tell me the material and I can have it treated. The company I work for treats and manufactures aircraft parts. Just tell how long and what temp.Sometimes the treatment can be tricky in that it might be a good idea to treat it in a manner that hardens the outside more so than in inside. That way you get the hard surface and ductility in the center. Only way to make sure of the treatment though is to sacrifice a few to a destructive test to check center hardness. Whatever the case if you send it to me I can have it done same day, only problem is I am on the east coast. But the price is right!

And what machine did you use it to spline it? Here down are offering me two different methods; by Mill with the shaft un-heat treated and with Stones with thwe shaft hardened, what did you use?
