Anybody know all the specifics on a Dana 44 rear out of a 74 CJ5. I have a 78 CJ7 I want to put it under. I have a spring over and was wondering how hard this will be to swap. Any info appreciated.
Thanks,
:nuke:

I believe it should fit with just moving the spring perches out . The wms to wms should be 51.5 and that should fit up to 81 cj7s until they went to wide track of 56in.
One more thing my GAL needs to sign off when done damn it. This was wheelinjp.

It is actually a pretty good swap. The d44 should have 30 spline one piece flanged axles with the 11x2 "big" drums. It is a real easy swap, just weld on the new spring perches and you are set. Don't forget to check the gear ratio :smokin: .

Should be 3.73 or 3.54 if I am not right correct me.
You got the 3.73 part right. That was the standard gear offering with 4.27's as an option in '74.

I just used wide tires on 10" rims & relatively stiff springs. That gives me ~4" extra overall width. It's very stable, but does'nt flex all that well.
Your spring perches will be 1.75" not 2.5" like you have.
That's not a problem to fix:D

I used to have that set up rolled too much. Got a 4 link now, its fun.

Do you mean rolled as in rolled side to side or rolled as in rolled over? I have the spring over setup now, and it doesn't seem to be to unstable. I suppose wider might be a good idea though

BOTH.........go wider and be happy. I suppose more back spacing would help too.
