I just bought a sheet to do under the doors. After reading the post about diamond plate corners, you all said POR 15 it, well no one in this country seems to know what the hell im talking about. So any paint/sealant suggestions. I was just goint to rivet the plate onto the body so i dont want to be slapping heaps of tar paint under it either.
thanks
I think that you can get it at either JTOutfitters or from Specter off road. Your local autobody supply shop should be able to find it for you.

POR-15 is just a brand name. There are many types of "paint over rust" paints. There should be something similar in Oz. All these paints do is convert the FeO2 (rust) to FePO4 and H2O. You could use Phosphoric Acid to do the same thing, then paint over it with any nice thick paint. You might find some good paint at industrial equipment shops.

I used POR during my "Rust-or-ation". The stuff has worked as advertised. Here is a link to their web page:

Your almost right. Yes Phosphoric (H3po4) acid is a great rust cleaner and does some what kill it. What you want is a rust converter: a tannin (usually in the form of tannic acid) and an organic polymer. The organic polymer provides a protective primer layer. Since the conversion reaction occurs faster in an acidic environment, some manufacturers will add oxalic or phosphoric acid to their rust converters to lower the pH and speed up the reaction.
The tannin is the heart of a rust converter. It reacts with the iron oxide, converting it to iron tannate, a stable blue/black anti corrosion product.
POR15 is just a thick moisture cured polyurethane. There is nothing else special about it, but the 30.00/Qt they charge. You can find the same kind of paint for 10.00/Qt at most industrial paint suppliers. It stops the rust by blocking O2 and moisture from the metal surface.

Great info Old Scout!
My method has been to use Muratic Acid (its cheap and available) to remove the rust, and then to prime IMMEDIATELY.
