Wanting to get rid of the OEM airbox to free up some space for a 2nd battery to power the winch as well as a way to let the engine breathe better in the Dusty Desert climate I live in here in the Middle East supporting the :usa: Navy Intelligence.

Anyone got any pics or info regarding this mod, I did a search and there wasn't $hit on the subject

Thanks!

Here's a few links to pics of the snorle I used to run. I carried an extension that easily connected to the intake (2nd and 3rd pic), for really deep stuff.

Here's a like to a page with details on a Toy snorkle, and a couple links on it to other pages as well:

Thanks for you ideas and the links but I think that I want something that is going to be higher and farther back then that.

I have had moments in my 4Runner which I have had water flow over the front of the hood (Even with a slow approach) so your design would have killed me in that situation. With an extension like you mentioned that would be helpful though for those DEEP DEEP situations.

Not only that but I had 10.5" of lift on the 4Runner..........I also didn't realize that the water was that deep when I entered either (Oops).

Thanks for the links.....

Hey Cbasset, I like your snorkel setup! I have a question for you

What part Number is your Filter?

And is that coupler a 3 inch to 4 inch adapter? or is it a 4 to 5?

What sort of tuping did you run through the front (picture is not clear enough to really tell). And how is it holding up to the heat that is created by the Radiator? Is that effecting your engine performance good or bad (I would say probably good, but if the air is getting really hot from the Radiator then who knows)

cbassett

It's a 3" conical filter

The reducer is a 3" to 4".

All the tubing is pvc, except the section that squeezes alongside the radiator (that piece is 4" flex tubing). I wrapped it in several layers of aluminum tape to help insulate from heat.

I didn't notice performance effect offroad, on the highway it seemed to help; getting the ram-air effect with cold air versus scavenging from the engine compartment or restrictive stock box location.

Very detailed writeup on my site of fitting an ARB snorkel and keeping the stock airbox but moving it so it sits perpendicular to the engine.

What are you guys all complaining about:question: A little bit of fabrication:question:
:rolleyes:C'mon... you guys can buy and bolt on most of your fun shi@t!

I have an FSJ Cherokee, try fabricating just about everything! I am going to be using the basic principle that Cbassett used on his rig. I am going cheat a little and implement the ARB exterior portion that you little guys can buy. But from there it is all custom bay-bee!:D

Post yer pics so everybody can benefit from your wisdom and Jeepers knowledge! CJ's, TJ's, XJ's, YJ's, ZJ's, etc. I am going to try and find a way to archive these kind of mods so if someone wants to do it they can use the archive as a reference manual. Picture clarity and well thought out explanations, so even the :barf: newbies can get a grip, will make it a bada$$ tool.

I'll be looking for your mod write-ups. The author of any write up will be consulted first and prior permission requested before I put your mod in! :)

And I'll say it like you heard it so many times before...
IT'S NOT WHAT YOU BUY... IT'S WHAT YOU BUILD!! :jeep:

I got a 92 YJ...

Kept the stock air box, run a well oild K&N.

I just took some elbows and 2" PVC. I ran the air intake up to the firewall right below the hood nextto the master cylinder.

I have pushed water about 1/3 up my hood accelerating hard in to it. (Water was probably around 30-4" deep static if I had stopped in the middle of it) not a problem, didn't suck water.

I theory I could completely submerge the hood and have around 20-30 seconds of air left before what is under the hood is used up.

AUSSIETJ ... I visited your linked write-up. Excellently put and well documented with clear pics. This is an really good example of how these kind of write ups should be done. I have never been uder the hood of a little jeep much less a TJ specifically, but I feel I could go to the hardware store, get what I need, go back to the garage and make this project happen. One  ... approx. how much time, liberally, do you estimate this project would take with current knowledge at hand?

Thanks, keith aka Tigger4X

Oh I thought you were going through deep water. Here are some pics of water crossings up here in Alaska. Know quite a few of these guys and if this is not getting it, nothin is.

Oh and remember they are over 100 miles from a town at times.

Hey alaskaZJ.. 30-40" of water is pretty deep considering at the time 40" was the top front edge of my hood. :flipoff2:

Those are 36x14.5 submerged......and that's not including the 10.5" of lift I am running on my other toy. That picture was in Virginia after a ran storm came and flooded our 4x4 spot. Water in that spot use to be 10-20" on average. The water came up to my side view mirrors at the deepest point after that storm!

For Virginia that is DEEP........now Alaska is a whole different story. I would love to wheel with you guys out there. The wheeling looks killer and the scenery looks as if it's to die for.

I'd stay away from storing the highlift under the hood. Gets mighty hot. It was funny watching a guy burn the shit out of his hands when he needed it on the trail. :)

the other issue with it under the hood is that it starts to crack the firewall where the struts attach to it. seems to put too much weight on them. nothing a welder can't fix though.

want to see some really hardcore snorkel action. hehe. this is from the manufacturers web site. Trust me when you see this movie you will be amazed.....

I have to give them credit though........it's cool as hell to see that thing turn into a SUBMARINE. Seems like someone was :smokin: to much crack that day.

Well now that I see your Rig out of the water it adds quite a bit.

Military Jeeper what branch are you in? You should try for Alaska if you are Army, Airforce or Navy (even have a few Marines here, Recon Guys)

I would think you are a Marine by the use of the word Brother but who knows.

Ya bro....it's is substantially looking bigger out of the water. Anyway, I am in the NAVY (7+ yrs) and won't be able to look for new orders anywhere until July 2003. Then if I do get to move where I want it will be Cali or Hawaii. I work intelligence in the Navy so there aren't a whole lot of places for me to go other then the BIG SPOTS.

Take care bro........:usa:

MILITARY JEEPER ... If you get West Coast and go to CALI ... Pt. Mugu/Port Hueneme is gonna put you smack in the middle of some of the best weather conditions in the world!!! It is supposedly 2nd only to the French Rivieras and has an average year round temp of 74 I think. I lived in Camarillo in Ventura County for most of my life and was spoiled rotten weather wise. You can choose just about any type of surrounding you want and find it in the local area ... beach front, plains, foothills, mountains, LA city type, hot, cool, whatever. You will be only 45 min N of Los Angeles and 45 min S of Santa Barbara. A pretty good central location to a lot of stuff. Stay safe out there MJ!! We got trails & waiting for you tah git back state side.

Good on ya.....if case nobody had told you before "THANKS".....thanks for sticking in there. Most people take for granite all the things that you give up and you having 18+ shows that you are a TROOPER, and here for the cause.

Maybe will will run into one another someday at a JOINT COMMAND. Take care and be safe....wherever you may be stationed.

You know I looked at a few of those pictures and I kept hearing
"Hay Yall!....Watch this!" It keeps ringing in my ears. LOL.

I have been trying to figure out how to snorkle my 75 K5. Mostly to try to get less dusty air. Lots of the trails around here durring the summer are just dust bowls. It's pretty bad when you having to clean a K&N every 2 trail rides. My big issue is a lot of the trails I run are narrow so I would proably be knocking it off on branches. I want to come up though the cowl like a Hummer so I can get it inboard some but the cowel is also part of the hood. Any ideas would be appreciated.

What I've seen a few people do is use PVC as the plumbing (ha-ha, get it) and route the intake through the firewall and put the fiter under the dash (a couple even put it in the glove box).
